After a big mishap in the garage Friday i was wondering if anyone has had the misfortune of spilling oil as you were changing it.
I was emptying my Rangers oil on Friday for a 600 mile weekend trip and mis-placed my 15 quart pan so when the oil slowed its drip rate the oil was pouring over the handle and not in the pan. Not only did it spill a cup or two of oil ,but it got on the bottom of the drip pan and as i dragged it from under the truck it left 2 more oil circles. That is the most oil I think I have ever spilled while changing my own .
To top that off , I had to start the truck before I changed the oil to back it up a few feet and it must have filled the filter. When I loosened the filter , the oil drained out all over my arm and some spots hit the floor and the frame of the truck. 3 rags and some kitty litter and my anger level subsided back to normal.
For this trip I used a new franken mixture of half 15w40 Delvac and half 5w20 Motorcraft semi-synthetic with a motor craft fl820s filter. I also put 5 ounces of lucas injector cleaner and 4 ounces of mmo in the fuel tank. The truck ran perfectly even in 80 degree heat.
I towed an 18 foot u-haul 300 miles and packed it full with my neighbors stuff for another 300 miles on the way back. I averaged 18.2 mpg on the way there and 16.9 on the return with the air on most of the way doing 60-65. Not bad for a 2001 Ranger with a 4.0 v-6. Now if i could just learn how not to spill oil i could join the bp petroleum team.

0.75qt of GC.

All soaked up with paper towels + kitty litter, then floor scrubbed with citrus based engine cleaner and washed.

A whole 55 gallon drum. We put it on the drum rack on it's side with the valve/hose in the bung. The next morning the whole drum had leaked onto the shop floor through a bad valve! Do you know how much oildri that took?!

when i was 18 i drained the oil out of my camaro went in to answer the phone and have an argument with my girl friend forgot to put the oil plug in and proceded to fill the crankcase with 5 quarts which overflowed the pan and went down my driveway... Pennzoil 10w40 that was 29 years ago

1 litre of really stinky gear oil. I had it on a washed out yogurt container sitting on a shelf. The shelf had a small hook on it to wind-up my trouble light cord. My bro had his atv parked in front of the shelf, he was real anxious to get going one day so he jumped on it rolled back a little and the shocks compressed enough to snag under the hook. Next thing we know the yogurt container burst all over his back....he threw out all of his clothes and he stunk for a couple of days despite multiple showers........I never laughed so hard..

About 4 quarts of used oil. I told my friend to empty the used only jug before putting it under the car. She didn't and when I pulled the plug, I got out of under the car to answer the phone.... the jug overfilled and it was a big mess.

Billy Mays here for Mighty Putty!

Got a leak? Fix it with Mighty Putty!

Have an oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico? Fix it with Mighty Putty!

The United States Constitution has a Fifth Amendment for a very, very good reason. I choose to exercise it now . . .

Personally it would be about 2 gallons. I just purchased a Porsche 911. I knew that it had 12 quarts, but for some reason it didn't quite register. I had 2 small pans. I put one under the engine drain and removed the plug. Maybe a 1/2 quart came out of the engine (dry sump). I then removed the plug from the oil bag on the side of the motor. I never seen oil come out of the hole so fast. It soon filled the pan. I tried to find the drain plug that fell into the pan but the oil was too hot. I then pulled the pan out and slid the other one under the stream of oil. When I pulled the other pan a bunch sloshed out all over me and the floor. The other pan quickly filled up and i ran around the shop looking for another pan. I couldn't find one but it didn't matter because the oil was finished coming out of the drain hole. Luckily I had several bags of Quicksorb near by.

The biggest spill I witness was 200 gallons of cooling oil. This oil was super light oil like baby oil, not water soluble oil. Someone left the access latch unlocked and when the oil started getting pumped through the machine, it went everywhere. I think it took several days to clean it up.

About 2-3 quarts.

Was using a pressurized oil dispensing gun for the first time, and didn't realize how much 'kick' it had. Put the end in the oil hole, and locked the trigger on full.

Hose propelled itself out of the hole, and started spraying fresh PYB 5W-30 all over me, the car, the walls, the floors...gawd, what a mess.

My co-workers were laughing SO hard, they could hardly help me clean it up.

A little goes a long way for sure.

I haven't spilt that much, but when filling the oil can today from a quart bottle, I kept thinking just a little more then it came out the top, then I pushed the squirter back down and maybe.

It was not an oil change, but back in the summer of 1985, 1,500 gallons of Pennzoil Long Life 15W-40. I won't say where it was and if you ask I will plead the 5th.
