What are you eating right now?

Nothing.

Currently 32 hours into an autophagy fast.

Testing my willpower to see if I can get through the day.

I have heard there are benefits to long term hunger, and going to see if I see any benefits.
18-24 hours in the hunger pangs were getting pretty bad, and cravings were tempting.

Went to bed on empty stomach, and slept readonably well. And surprisingly not overly hungry on waking.
So far only water, and black coffee.
Good on you sir.

It might be bad timing in holiday season, but I am 52 and single.
Living alone there is no one else tempting my willpower as I watch them eat.

However the photos I glanced at on here are somewhat testing me.

Not really too badly overweight. Around 175-180 lbs @ 5 ft 7 inches.

Never have really needed to.
I was keeping busy sweeping and puttering around in my garage yesterday, but nothing strenuos on my days off.

I had a job that kept me quite active and wore the same size style Jeans from the time I graduated (1990), up until about 5 or 6 years back.

I still wear the same suit I purchased 25 years ago.

Needed to do the first alteration to the waist line last year.

I think I have a good metabolism.
I used to be able to eat all I wanted, and never gained weight.
Thankfully my appetite isnt what it used to be.

Autophagy may kick in after at least 12 hours of fasting which means people who eat an early dinner and a late first meal with nothing but water, coffee, or tea in between, see usually autophagy kick in within every 24 hour period. There is strong evidence to suggest this is beneficial. Longer fasting periods, especially those over 48 hours will increase autophagy further. I do one, two or three fasting days on a semi-regular basis, maybe every 4 to 6 weeks. I also tend to not eat for at least 8-10 hours between my last and my first meal because I believe the metabolic long-term advantages of pushing my metabolism into a catabolic state every day are incalculable.

Luckily, after a day or two it gets easier for most people.

Hunger in itself is not beneficial. It's the suppression of the m-Tor signaling pathway and activation of it's counterpart, AMPK, and the catabolic state that are beneficial. Faced with lack of nutrients, our metabolism must get its energy by breaking down tissue fir energy. The two main sources are body fat and defective/abnormal cells. If you can avoid hunger during fasting it's better because you fast more easily.

Hunger and cravings should diminish after a day or two. But yes, will power is required. Nothing that is worth doing is ever easy.

One thing to watch out for is ketosis, a metabolic state that comes with fat burning because the body is low on glucose. When you go into ketosis you may taste a weird taste in your mouth or smell an unusual smell when breathing out forcefully through your nose. During ketosis, the body produces acids called ketones that you can detect with your taste buds and olfactory senses. Ketones smell like stinky cheese or acetone. If you have metabolic issues, ketosis can cause a life-threatening condition, ketoacidosis.

The keto diet is based on the concept of keeping the body in ketosis for several hours a day and it is ketosis that leads to rapid fat loss.

Ketosis is induced by a lack of blood sugar (very low or no-carb diet) or by the body's inability to use blood sugar prooerly (undiagnosed or untreated diabetic). It is important to have a doctor check you out before endeavoring on a fasting journey because an undiagnosed metabolic condition could make such an endeavor deadly.

Anecdote: an acquaintance decided to fast hard to induce weight loss witout previous medical consultation. She started fasting and after 4 days she ended up in the ER with multiple organ failure. Her blood glucose levels were over 700. She was an undiagnosed Type 2 diabetic and when she started fasting her pancreas stopped making any insulin. As a result her blood sugar kept increasing into a deadly range. At the same time she did lose a surprising amount of weight but not from fat loss but rather from her body metabolizing her muscles. She came within an inch of dying and she did cause permanent kidney damage with the crazy high blood sugar.

Apologies for the lengthy diatribe but I want you to be safe.

I typed this on my phone so there are tons of errors to be found. This has been an unfortunate reality for the last few days. I have a tiny 2.5"x0.5" window in which to type with 1/8" talk letters. This tricked-out browser also makes using emoticons neigh impossible. The browser refuses all (?) cookies and makes website usage difficult. But it's secure. So secure I can barely use it. Here we go again with the push notification pop-up. Stick a fork in me, I'm done.

Neighbor stopped over after church. Guess they had a Christmas dinner afterwards today.

Brought a big container of food. Still unopened because I had just finished my Stouffers Lasagna from the microwave. :(
Will see what is in there tonight.

You ever think about implementing some strength training during the week probably the greatest benefit you can do and never to old to start.

When you get up and groan that's sort of normal. When you sit down and groan you better get cracking.

Someone I know (not me!) wears still the same itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow polka dot bikini but really should not do so! Isn't that right @Jdeere562?

The widely held belief or rather convenient excuse that a person's metabolism slows naturally down with age because of age is not true. What is true is that as we age many of use become more sedentary which slows our metabolism down. Also with increasing age nutritional requirements change and this should be addressed.

Good job!

I just made a batch of carrot-orange juice, and in a while I'll start on a red lentil and vegetable soup. I used a blend of Cara cara and regular Naval oranges along with the carrots.

I was hoping you were going to reply; thank you.

But what’s the long term outlook just back to the same old same old what do you actually gain is my question if nothing is changed long term. Is it the cool next trendy thing to do and that’s it.
Autophagy has been around since the beginning of humankind. Coupling it with a keto or carnivore diet is how our ancestors ate. Call it trendy if you will but it's a lifestyle that actually works.

Right but if you don't implement the lifestyle what's gained. My understanding he's not doing the lifestyle or going to be doing the lifestyle.

There's more to this than it being fad. Historically speaking, fasts have existed in most or maybe even all cultures so there may be an innate drive to fast on occasion.

There is pretty strong evidence that an occasional prolonged fast, more than a couple of days, and the resulting increased autophagy may have a disease-preventing effect due to increased elimination of abnormal cells.A prolonged fast could be regarded as sort of a biological house cleaning. Another effect is sort of a reset of metabolic functions.

Biologically speaking, prolonged fasting* is not required for good health, and autophagy occurs anyway but as I said, there's pretty good evidence of befits from an occasional fast because it boosts autophagy. In no way would I suggest anybody let themselves go and then try to undo the damage by fasting. That's not how it works.

I would say, if an occasional fast makes you feel good, do it. Many people say they gain mental clarity from prolonged fasting.

I want to be able to surf at 90! ☠️

*Not eating overnight (8-12 hours) is however necessary for almost everyone who wants to maintain an optimized metabolism.
