I used to work at Wal-Mart when Sam Walton was alive and the boss.Things are VERY different now than they were then.Wal-Mart,when I was associated with them was a descent place to work, they also had a defferent attitude toward their customers.

When Sam was alive, the customer was the most important thing, now WM could care less how the customer is treated. They are now just a $ sign coming and going through the stores doors.
WM knows that if one customer stops coming that there will be 3-4 that will take their place.
They dont care.

In my town, they have run out all of the other stores, people have no where else to go,WM knows this.
It is the same way in the next city.K-Mart has closed,Winn-Dixie is leaving and Roses left several years ago.Now the closest place to have a choice of shopping is 40-45 miles away.
While this isnt that far in our day,it is when you need a few things and cant drive the houre it takes to get their.(It takes an hour because of traffic)

For you old folks....Remember when Sears ruled the world? AT&T and IBM had virtual monopoly??

Time changes all things. We're a supplier to Wal-Mart and they are no worse than some others like Lowe's, Home Depot, etc. Many big chains have bought into the Wal-Mart philosophy of beating the vendor/supplier relentlessly.

You find less American or high quality products at these places all the time simply because our vendors can't operate at a loss!!! Many elect not to supply Wal-Mart anymore.

It can't last for the long term. Something will have to give. Wal-Mart will eventually be another Sears.

As far as tools go, there are US made tools, but you won't find them at Wal-Mart, and they cost about double what the made-in-China stuff costs.

i just purchased my american made channel locks at wal-mart

I don't go to Walmart, a place where the employees are underpaid and consequently uninterested and totally unhelpful. Can't really blame them, but only the company who squeezes their workers in order to afford those low prices. Naw thanks, I won't support that sort of business.

How much do you think workers in small, high priced retailers get paid? How about minimum wage and no benefits. And on top of that absolutely no chance for advancement because all of the management jobs are taken my family members of the owner. I know this from personal experience.

The real issue here is the grocery departments of the "super center" type stores. The "big three" grocery chains in CA, Albertsons, Kroger and Safeway pay off Republicans while the Retail Clerks Union pays off Democrats in an unholy alliance on this issue.

Exactly!!!

The rise and fall of buisinesses is similar to the rise and fall of empires.

Their lack of customer service keeps me from setting foot in a Walmart. Walmart is not as cheap as they used to be. I have farmed all of my shopping to other sources.

I worked for Kmart in high school, it was no better than what people are describing walmart as.
manager would not let high school kids go home at a decent hour. I would get off around 11:15 Pm and home by 11:45 and back at school by 7:00 am.
I asked the manager If i could go home earlier and she NO.If i did it for you I would have to do it for every kid in school.
From the sounds of that she didnt care if we graduated or not.
Sounds just like walmart to me.
PAy was $6.50 but that was 10 years ago.

Wal-Mart is bad. They ran Kmart out of town(where I used to get all my oil). Now we are getting a supercenter in about 2 weeks and there is(was)a nice bakery in town that EVERYONE I know went to purchase cakes. Now WALMART hired all their bakers and they are closed.

Walmart is the bastion of the free market because they sell you the products of China only without the pay and benefits an American worker would demand....go Walmart.

Keep shopping Walmart and you will soon be buying North Korean products at an even better value. Screw the pin heads - you gotta save 20 cents on that pack of toilet paper.

Lil Kim has to build his bombs you know.....keep shopping Walmart so he can.

If you think that is bad, listen to this.

I live in a town of about 10,000 people.A Walmart came in as a small store several years ago.
At the time,we had shoe stores, clothing stores, hardware stores and several grocery stores other places to shop.

We now have a Walmart Supercenter and two small grocery stores. The other stores have closed.

We had a guitar shop open up.After it did so,Walmart started selling guitar supplies. When it did so,the shop had to close,it couldnt compete.
When the shop closed,Walmart stopped selling the supplies.
This is DIRTY.

A small bakery opened up a while back,it had to close.A barber shop is there now.

The closest place to find a REAL variety in shopping is 40-45 miles away in a city of hundreds of thousands and quite large.
On a good day and at the right time, you could get to this area in about an hour.

While this may not sound like a long time,it is when you need basic supplies like bread and or milk etc.

It is also not the kind of place to go 'just' to do your everyday shopping,it is so large and theres just to much hastle.

The closest place to find a grocery store with a wide variety is 15 miles away,at Kroger's.This is where we go for most of the grocery shopping.

While the local Walmart is a Super Center, there grocery prices are quite high, they have no competition, they can charge pretty much what they want.

This Walmart is in an area where people from 3 surrounding counties come to and is sitting beside a MAJOR north to south intersate.
With this kind of exposure, the Walmart here does what in wants.

WallMart will continue to do this until people require service over price. Those who do require service can't use Wallmart anyway. The tough thing is ..as has been said ..is that they kinda leave a "scorched earth" in their wake. The service oriented small shops get culled and don't rebound when the situation requires it. Most of your small stores are family owned ..and tend to die out in two or three generations anyway. You don't see too many family owned bars or resturants in the same hands over three generations. In any other business (clothing, sporting goods, etc.) it just means they close their doors.

Perhaps we can no longer afford this level of service???
