Just saw in the WallyMart Canada flyer that their 'every day' price for Synpower 5W30 (4.73 L jug) is $26.88 CDN ($19.76 US) . This is half their price for Mobil 1 5W30. Is the price a reflection of the quality of the oil? Or are they using it as a 'loss leader'?

Loss leader, definitely. Walmart is the king of loss leaders. Besides, the price of oil almost never correlates to quality.

At $26.88, I would say it's hardly a loss leader.

VSP is an excellent product and I would use it with confidence. The price is not a reflection of good/better/best. VSP is well regarded on this forum.

Try buying their SynPower in a 5 L jug instead of the 4.73 L jug, and see what happens.

93K, primarily on Synpower, in my Cruze which is known for turbo failure, oil consumption, and other things, without a problem. Not just a case of "you get what you pay for".

In that line, I've only looked closely at Synpower 5W30, which has a combined calcium/sodium detergent composition that one additive maker has warned can be a powerful accelerant for LSPI. I'd sure think twice about using Synpower in a DIT engine, but I'm also an OCD type...
Another poster on this site shared what he learned from contacting Valvoline about dexos1 Gen 2, which includes an LSPI test. He was told that a new "Full Synthetic" dexos1 Gen 2 compliant line will be introduced, while Synpower would not have that approval.

If you look at the list of oils that already have the dexos1 Gen 2 license, two "Valvoline Full Synthetic" oils are listed.

OK, I was suspect as this price seemed unrealistic. Never see synthetic oils @ this price point. Last week in the US I paid around 23 bucks for the 5 qt jug of Mobil 1 @ Wally Mart. Here @ home it would've been priced around 41 bucks US @ WallyMart.

I'm glad VP mentioned the Dexos points. Sometimes we find marketers selling product @ a great price, only to find that the specs are obsolete.

Gen 2 doesn't go "live" until September, but it looks like all the old dexos1 licenses expire at that point...I don't think anybody without a DIT engine should care, and I'm also sure that many DIT owners won't care!

Five years ago, that $23 Mobil 1 jug was $23 Canadian as the Canadian dollar was worth roughly the same as the US Dollar. I stocked up on M1 AFE. Glad I did. My how times have changed.

The 4.73L synthetic jugs have been at the $25-27 price point for several years now. Never buy the 5L jugs from Walmart. They never go on sale.

Every September, VWB and VSP go on sale during Walmart's annual anniversary week sale. Keep an eye out for even better deals.
