Thoughts on only changing oil filter every other oil change

This is totally fine, especially if you are doing short OCIs (5K) to combat fuel dilution or just want to be on the safe side.
You can never remove all oil during oil change anyway, so changing another couple oz will make no difference.
As far as filters, you can examine them, the engines run clean nowadays, and filters look good at 10K marks or more.'

This is not about saving money for me, more about saving time.
I change oil every 4K miles, and change filter every other time. Its a lot faster and less mess if you skip oil filter.

I usually use the filter for 2-4 OCI or 1-2 years. A quality filter can easily perform well for this interval.

In a typical SI (gasoline) engine there just isn't enough filter loading to justify the expense unless you are doing long / extended OCI.

Why? If the filter is perfectly serviceable for two OCIs??? Your motor will not build up sludge or blow up with this practice.
I agree with this logic. It’s like saying “I opened the hood to add washer fluid so I might as well change the air filter while I’m here”. I’m a big fan of getting a decent life out of things and not replacing them early when in fact they are still perfectly suitable to keep going.

I wonder what a quick lube center would say if you told them I need an oil change but leave the filter until my next visit

In a case like that it wouldn’t be a good idea because they would probably charge you the same amount anyway. Plus you often hear stories of fast lube places not changing the filter anyway 😬

Assume using a Fram ultra, FCI every 10k and an OCI every 5k. My BS particle count data supports the importance of the OCI to remove the particles less than 20 microns. Wear metals Fe, Al, Cu levels did not appear elevated. This is for the big box store synthetic oils.

On the other hand for the extended interval boutique HPL oils, it is reversed.
FCI every 5k and an OCI every 10k. If the uoa is ok, I may even return to FCI every 10k and an OCI every 10k.

I do this on my Caravan with Pentastar....2x yearly oil changes around 3K, each, changing the filter every other oil change. I want to minimize the times I tighten and loosen the plastic filter housing cap, knowing these **** things can break and leak.
Same idea on my 2013 JKU.

I didn't until I switched to a longer filter. I used to run the OEM PF48 size which is like 3" x 3.5" and then went up to the PF63 family which is 3" x 4" basically. I drive about 9k miles per year so that's roughly a 4500 mile OCI and a filter once per year. Currently have a Fram Titanium on.

its just hard to believe one is oil change obsessed or OCD and not complete the oil change with replacing the filter at each interval.
Some cars are such a huge pain or huge mess to change the filter that it can be nice to have to skip that task every other change. When I was doing 2x OCIs with my last Civic I would usually have it so that I would time it so that I wasn’t changing the filter during a mid winter oil change when I just wanted to get out of the cold quicker. I had an oil change last week on my Civic when it was super cold and I had to lay down in a little bit of snow and I would have loved to have kept the filter on there but it was my first run with VRP (which was another reason why I got stuck changing the oil mid winter instead of being able to wait until March)

As long as you are using a quality oil filter that is rated for 10k+ miles, then go for it. I personally wouldn't go beyond 5k - 6k miles on a jobber filter.

I wonder what a quick lube center would say if you told them I need an oil change but leave the filter until my next visit
Your point? What does it matter what a quick lube place thinks? Or rather, since when would any BITOG member be interested in the opinion of a quick lube center?

I've seen this statement come up due to weather or age there's been members who say they were hanging up the towel on oil changes.

Since @kschachn hasn't shown up here yet, I'll link to his reply to the question not long ago.:)

A link to a link with all kinds of links on the subject :D

To the OP, if you're going to leave the filter on, don't bother removing it to drain the oil. Honda and others who show leaving the filter on for 2 OCIs don't say to drain the filter. Best practice is to not disturb the filter if you run it twice.

As someone who does 10k oil changes on my Civic, I feel like people who do 5k oil changes and go 10k on one filter are perfectly fine. Although you could always just skip that oil change in the middle and just go 10k on both the oil and the filter 😃

Honda recommends changing the filter every other oil change, so that means 20,000 miles!

What does this say for guys, like me, that have gone to 6 month change intervals, due to short tripping? I've gone two oil changes per filter, but maybe I should extend further?
