First oil change recommend me a filter please

Nissan filter and gasket for drain plug from the dealer. What oil filter came on it now? It may be different than a USA parts dept replacement. Or it may be the same. Filters aren’t that expensive, like $10 from a dealer probably. You could get a cutter and cut one open to show here. If all looks good buy the others.
I picked up a Nissan filter from dealer for around $10 plus tax. The OEM that’s on from the factory has blue lettering. The one I picked up has read if that makes a difference.

I'd do the first oil change anywhere in the 500-1000 mile range, then just go for the 5000 mile OCIs. IMO no real need for an OCI between those. The first OCI is going to get anything major out of the system and most break-in debris will be over with by 500-1000 miles.

I'd recommend the Carquest Premium or O'Reilly MicroGard Select too for the filter.

Perfect that sounds like a plan. I also picked up 2 5 quart jugs of Quaker Street ultimate protection for the first oil change. What do you think? Or should I go for something better? Thanks

“…or should I go for something better?”

What makes you think QSUP isn’t “better?”

If you’re going to stay with 5k mile OCIs, that oil will serve you just fine.
And since you’ve already purchased two 5-quart containers, use it.

The only reason I purchased it there was a display at the store 😂 plus I could always put it in my sister‘s car. She can care less what oil brand she gets when it’s free 😂😂

Because that’s what sisters are for…………….😎

So much great advice I end up buying one of each to try out well actually two of the Carquest lol

I have two Nissan VQ40's - same filter.

The Fram TG used to be a fan favorite here, until we in general starting seeing some FRAM quality control issues. Not any specific filter - in general. I stopped using Fram personally. Not telling anyone else what to do. I wish they were the same as the old times.

A decade ago I used to run the OEM filter (Its made by Grupo Gonher) until the louvers started showing up not open enough. A year ago I ordered another for fun - still not open enough for my liking. Some things never change. If the louvers are open enough its a very basic filter but at least has silicon ADBV.

Now I run the Premium Guard type (like the two carquest you have) or a Hengst, which I really like the build of and price but it has no specs and a nitrile valve.

But its a VK56 so its mostly indestructible anyway.

The OE Nissan and parts counter units were junk when I owned two Nissan, in fact a defective PRC NISSAN Filter destroyed the engine the first week of ownership, and the Nissan Mexican filter have had inverting ADBV issues. Bean counting an engine to death. Sad Fact.

There will be no finger pointing to an appropriate catalog part# aftermarket filter - (maybe some pointing to my HONDA suggestion)
Ken, just for posterity, how many engines have you lost over the years, and what was the cause? I’ve seen several colorful tales of your escapades but it’s hard for an amateur to keep track. I think dnewton3 should make that thread a sticky and it would get thousands of views. 👍🏻

The TG uses fiber end caps, so any ruffled leaf spring should seal a better on those end caps then on a metal end cap. Only other thing to watch out for is the louvers formation, but that holds true with any filter with louvers.

Oil filters are being cheapened by Champ Labs and the cheapening is ongoing and could last many more years.

Tearing of media
Leaks of unfiltered oil
Closed louvers
Excess glue which could break off and clog engine
Manufacturing filters in low cost centers like Brazil
Shody quality assurance

are making oil filter choice far more important than oil choice.

Recommendations on this thread for the Carquest Premium or O'Reilly MicroGard Select are excellent choices for a well build filter.

Regarding Nissan as a company, I did some research and the consensus is they may go into bankrupcy within a year.
Their proposed merger with Honda looks to be paused as the top executes of both companies had a falling out.
If Nissan does go into bankrupcy, they may emerge from it and survive, or they may go out just like Radio Shack.
My concern would be OEM parts availability if Nissan dies as a company.

let’s say if Nissan does go out what technically happens with the vehicles they sold do you actually lose the warranty? I would think so if I’m correct. Does that mean the car value goes higher? 😁

If Nissan goes out of business (like Radio Shack did), I would think Nissan used car prices would go lower as certain parts in every car (even new cars) have no after market support, like specialized parts inside sliding doors, sun roof assemblies, certain sensors / computer modules in the car, etc. I would imagine in bankruptcy court that Nissan would sell their entire parts warehouses and distribution rights to some after market parts company, but there would still be a lot of unknowns.

If Nissan goes out of business, then I'd think so will Infinity. My experience with an Infinity G35 was that 90% of the parts for things like the engine, drive train, etc used on a Nissan were the same for the Infinity. Any time I looked for parts for the G35, I could find the same part in a Nissan labeled package for about 1/2 the cost.

Nissan won't go out of business. Foxconn wants to buy into them - to make EV's. Foxconn is the company that has been building your iphones for apple all these years, and is loaded with cash.

The Honda thing was orchestrated by the Japanese government because they don't want a Taiwanese company having a lot of control over a Japanese manufacturer. Foxconn has again said there interested in "working with Nissan"

It doesn't change things - who knows what long term parts availability for a Nissan will be. Historically they have been awesome, but that could change based on new management. However I am pretty sure Nissan will not be allowed to go under - too much money floating around in the world, and since they punted Ghosn they have been doing very well, both quality and profit per vehicle. Unfortunately they made a lot of sins under his rule so there in a hole for sure.

Just reporting facts. I guess this Forum doesn't appreciate that. Colorful tales? A byproduct of living and experience.
Grow up!

How does oil get around a thick cardboard endcap at the base when it jammed into the can with only 0.001" clearance in spots?

I was actually complimenting the way you relay all the details of all your numerous experiences in dispatching engines, but I guess asking a simple question struck a nerve. Nvm…
