The New Fram Ultra......

Ordered 6 of the old ones on Amazon.... They seem to still be available.

Well, for the past few years I guess I have been out of the loop, thinking that Bosch and Purolator were the best bang for your buck and Fram was crap. After reading on filters this weekend, I am surprised of the huge and loyal following of Fram. I have a new, 2021 Ford 7.3L and want to purchase and put 6 filters on the shelf...... and what I am reading here the Tough Guard is the filter most of you would choose. Is this correct?

I hear you all ..... and I searched and found some of the old ones available on Amazon.... I ordered 6 of them.

sorry, Amsoil filters are made by Champ labs

Amsoil filters used to be made by Wix and now their made by Champion labs

AMSOIL filters have been made by a variety of companies, depending on the can. I believe at one point it was Hastings, Wix and Champion, varying by part number. The media was supplied by Donaldson. Donaldson may also have made a few of the part #'s, I can't remember exactly, but I do recall there was some diversity in the supply chain.

I doubt Amazon or Fram has updated the photo to the new box. But you sill might luck out if Amazon still has old stock,

Frampions have already been making their return-the "Fram" Force, CQ Blue & others at AAP are some, as are the ST 20K, RP, even the K&N Silver ones on sale recently. Ecore center tubes, either metal backed synthetic (RP), cellulose/syn blend media (ST 20K & K&N Sliver), or the wacky Ultra of this thread with it's sprayed-on synthetic media.

Can I tell without opening up a filter? Is there a manufacturing date printed on the can that reveals whether it is the old mesh or new, non-mesh?

Maybe the obvious way to tell is if the box is printed with, "Durable Metal Screen".

I just got cartridge fram ultra on amazon and it does have metal backing

No sir! I bought a couple new 9688 and they were in the new box. Used a flashlight to confirm. According to code they were made in July 2021.

You should be able to see the metal screen through the centre tube if it is there.

I got an email from Fram where they stated the changes on the oil filters will be happening over the next 6 to 8 months, probably time to hit:

I would not trust amazon and walmart websites, so many times they have old pictures that do not match stuff you getting

yeah picture on Amazon isn't too meaningful.
They will let you return it no questions asked, but no guarantee that the picture will match what you get.

I ordered some Ultra’s from Amazon with old photo thinking I was getting the metal screen backing…..nope. They are the new improved version. I’ll use them for 20k and sleep well.

I'm seeing a huge amount of acquisitions, and I truly fear that American industry is NOT READY for this century! Having the same parent company for every American made oil filter cannot be good.
There is very little future in oil filtration. Electric is coming and imagine the "consolidation" the oil filter market if it's only market was commercial/Industry?

I can see Champion Labs being absorbed by Fram. Champ Labs has no brand recognition, and Fram does(Walmart, advertisements) Right now the acquisitions are purely patent based. Close Champ and Spin off Fram into it's own company. The volume of oil filters needing to be produced will steadily decline with more electrics on the road.

Yeah, this is sketchy. It would be nice if Donaldson acquired Champ, if Champ is to be acquired, and perhaps Baldwin/Hastings if that's the direction things are headed, to keep at least two large players in the game.
