It’s been pretty hot past few weeks here in texas and i was wondering how is my oil geeling sitting in sweatbox garage. It is like 120 in there. Would that be ok foe extended oil storage? Or should i move it to a cool dry place? Where do you all keep yours?

I agree. But there’a a reason manufacturers recommend to keep it in a cool dry place. I assume the heat should reduce shelf life. The question is by how much?

+1

Do you have basements in Texas?
That's where I store mine.

The only issue I can think of would be leaving the jugs to bake in the direct sun. It wouldn’t affect the oil directly but the plastics might degrade due to uv exposure.

Then again, gas stations used to keep oil on racks outside way back when but that was in the cardboard and metal can era.

You shouldn’t worry about it.

Agree that 120°F isn't going to hurt the oil but might cause issues with the plastic.

So have you got a bit of closet space? Just for the oil, no tools or anything else need to come inside.

I guess the oil goes into the same closet where i keep my detailing products. Not sure if wifey is going to be happy

I’ve never worried about keeping my oil in the garage but I have had bottles of coolant and car wash soap crack and leak the contents out all over the garage.

Growing up in South Texas our motor oil was first kept in a detached primitive shed, then later in our detached garage when it was built. First cardboard cans, then plastic bottles after those came out around 1986. Some of the old carboard cans would lose integrity and start to "sweat" oozing motor oil where the cardboard was spiral rolled. Plastic bottles kept out of the UV of direct sunlight were never a problem. I used the last of my dad's stash of original white round plastic quart bottles of Quaker State plain Jane SAE 30 HD in 1993, there were no issues with the containers.

Later I lived in SE Louisiana on property with a detached garage. I cleaned out the local AZ when they clearanced Exxon Superflow in plastic quart bottles back around 2007, I used up the last of it around 2011 and no container issues with the plastic quart bottles left in the cardboard case boxes thus shielded from sunlight.

My current stash is in my attached garage at my current residence in San Antonio and I have zero concerns.

Hide them under ground with your guns so the government can't find them ... They may ban them soon! I mean ban the conventional oil

I had lots of oil in outside shed and it got very hot in there in the summer time. I moved them to the garage which is facing north with a very steady temperature. I didn't do any research but didn't want them to get too hot and leak ... I had lawn mower and outboard oil and gear oil leaking all over the place in there so they are now all in the relatively cool garage.

I keep all my oil and car care products in my garage. I challenge anyone to find hotter garages in this country, than you'll find in the Southwest Mohave and Sonoran Deserts of Arizona. There aren't any. And I don't know of any subdivisions currently being built in Death Valley.

Add hot cars parked in them, and the temps are even hotter. I've never had a problem with oil, soaps, or waxes. I do use liquid wax because the paste will become liquid anyway, if it's sitting in a 140F garage. And it's easier to dispense it from a bottle, than from a tin. As was said, the oil in your engine goes from ambient to 200+F every time you start your car. Then back down again. If it can't take being stored in a hot garage, I sure wouldn't want it in my engine.

Chemical reactions take place faster in hotter temperatures.
Oil and it's additives form waxy deposits at lower temperatures.

Both reduce the shelf life of unused engine oils...regardless of whether hotter or colder are experienced in the 3-12 months that the oil is ACTUALLY in the engine.

3, 4, 5 years in the garage, no sweat.

I keep my oil in a detached garage.
Never a problem.
A little heat won't hurt it.
Worry about something important.

They built a modern quick lube here … that oil is stored ambient … but reckon they move it faster than us stash holders …

It’s probably worth spreading all of mine out and use in the oldest first ~ but it’s too darn hot for that

I pour hot used oil out of the engine into those plastic bottles. Haven't had one blow yet.
