Something needs to be done with truckers

At the risk of beating a dead horse. Unless you actually do something you are just a whiner. Call the Highway Patrol in the states you drive. Explain it as a safety issue. If the first call doesn't get results, make more calls. Eventually, they'll listen. Truckers have forums and talk. If a few get ticketed for obstructing traffic, others will hear about it.

One voice is just going to get blown off...the only way to get something done about this is to start a petition...

Nonsense. One angry soccer mom can get the police to slow drivers down around the fields. There's no reason why your voice would be ignored. It's a law in Ohio to keep right except to pass. If a petition is what's needed, do it.

For the record, I agree with you about the odd laws for treating CDL holders differently.

That's just it, these truckers are following the law when they're passing, problem is, it takes them forever to do it. Therefore, I don't know if LE can do anything about it, even if they're willing to. What is needed in this situation is a traffic impediment law. Something like "semis must stay in the right lane and can only pass when doing so will not impede traffic flow"...

There are no 'odd laws' that give CDL licensed drivers an advantage that I'm aware of. The officer gave the OP a break and stated 'he could throw the book at him and he could lose his license'. It was up to the discretion of the cop whether to 'throw the book at him' or cut him a break because his lively hood depended on him not losing his license. Where I come from it's called compassion. If the OP had gotten the ticket, I'm sure he would have still complained.....Geez!

You're still looking at my scenario the wrong way. I wasn't complaining because he "let me off", I was complaining because if I had a non-CDL license, he wouldn't have said what he said...I see no reason for my having a CDL having any bearing on that situation...I was driving my car, not a semi...

From the CA vehicle code:

21758. In the event any vehicle is being operated on any grade
outside of a business or residence district at a speed of less than
20 miles per hour, no person operating any other motor vehicle shall
attempt to overtake and pass such slow moving vehicle unless the
overtaking vehicle is operated at a speed of at least 10 miles per
hour in excess of the speed of the overtaken vehicle, nor unless the
passing movement is completed within a total distance not greater
than one-quarter of a mile.

Yes....You know exactly what I'm saying.

Arguing with you about this is useless. It's clear you're taking the perspective of a trucker, and truckers can do no wrong in your eyes, and anyone who disagrees is in the wrong according to you.

In effect, that would mean truckers would be prohibited from overtaking each other anywhere except on completely open highways. That seems... harsh.

Why is it so critical for the trucker who wants to pass another truck to get that extra 1 or 2 mph? They could simply just slow down 1 or 2 mph and stay in the right lane until they can pass without holding up anyone else. That doesn't sound harsh to me. They don't have to be maxed out right to the governor limit all the time...

Simple answer; Because they can. Besides it's entertaining to watch drivers throw up their hands, yell inside the vehicle through the windshield and lay on the horn when they finally get a chance to pass.
Two trucks side by side up a hill is called elephant racing. Even better when it's three trucks, three lanes across. Why do they do that? Because they can.

Would you be OK with 20-30 trucks lined up nose to tail waiting until it's possible to pass without holding up traffic? What would happen when a few cars are trying to enter or exit the highway, and those trucks are blocking their path?

The more I read this thread, the more I think of the Smokie and the Bandit movie where Burt Reynolds gets away with the help of the truckers blocking law enforcement.

That's illegal, but you're right, they do this stuff because they can...because LE doesn't enforce traffic laws anymore...

If they're blocking exit and entrance ramps then they're following each other way too closely, which is also illegal...
