They're outta control. I've never seen so many that just don't give a rat's batootie about laws or common courtesy. I have seen them doing two things lately that they should be getting ticketed for. One is they're camping in the left lane on 4 lane highways. They're not overtaking any other vehicles, they're just driving in the left lane for no reason, and others have no choice but to pass them on the right. The other thing I'm seeing them doing more and more often is driving in the far left lane when there are more than 2 lanes. Semis are supposed to stay clear of the left lane a drive in the right 2 lanes. These guys should be getting ticketed for impeding traffic flow, but I guess as long as law enforcement is non-existent, and nothing is being done about it, like people and cell phone use while driving, the problem is only going to get worse until enough people get killed....

We've been having this problem down here too! We don't really have many 3 lanes so the second issue is non existent, but as far as staying in the left lane for no reason, they won't stop. It's very annoying and makes traffic hard to get through. They are also really bad about running red lights when they have time to stop a lot of time. I used to think truck drivers were some of the better trained drivers on the road, but not so much these days.

I hate when they try to pass each other on 2-lane stretches of freeway, reducing the entire flow of traffic down to 55-60 mph.

Yeah, me too. But seems there are a lot of truck drivers on the roads today that are pretty unprofessional. Make me wonder how they ever got their license.

And I've also noticed a lot of truck drivers use their truck as an intimidation tool towards smaller vehicles. The real "tool" is behind the wheel.

+1 it makes me so mad. If your truck doesn't have the power to make a legitimate pass stay out of the way. Some of us have meetings or job sites to run and need to run 70-80.

I don't get how drivers with CDL's do boneheaded things, the consequences are so high.

But just today I was being tailgated by a cement mixer on I95, the car in front of me was doing 55, clearly I couldn't go faster...but he was still 6in from my bumper. I changed lanes because I didn't want his dangerous driving to kill me, those things don't stop well!

I believe that the long term shortage of drivers puts many on the road with lower levels of experience. Also, there are LOTS of trucks out there delivering all the stuff we want and it's no big surprise to find out that the skill and courtesy levels vary widely - just like with the rest of us.

One of the MAJOR problems is that due to that criminal NAFTA trade agreement there are TONS of non-US drivers today, heck many of them from what I can tell are not just from Mexico, but also Russia, and other countries and can barely speak English, if at all. I work at a job where I contact these drivers and many cannot communicate in English at all, plus are ill trained or so poorly trained I'm surprised they qualify for a CDL license but likely they are getting a truck drivers license from Mexico for a fee that bribes the transport department there. It's a joke.

We've gone over this on the board several times; when two trucks are hogging the highway, it's usually because they are speed governed. So if 1 is governed at 58, and another at 59, the one at 59 will try and pass the other and it takes what seems like a millennium. Plus, they have to deal with all the crackheaded public motorists passing them and drving like outlaws because they hate truckers. I give them the benefit of the doubt because they're doing a hard job for low pay and I personally like my grocery store and other stores stocked with stuff I need and want.

Your thoughtful and reasoned response has NO PLACE on this board!

It's not all about you. If the speed limit is 70, passing a 69mph vehicle is perfectly legal.

As the OP's comments, federal law prohibits driving in the left lane unless passing a slower vehicle. Unfortunately, it's an under enforced statute but a big contributor to road rage.

+1 seems they'll hire any dope to drive one these days. No offense to the real deal drivers out there 10-4.

I must add its not just the truckers too. Many times cars will also change lanes for no apparent reason just before youre going past them in the fast lane. The drivers seem to be oblivious to everything outside their envirobubble. Some of the worst are in electric/hybrids. I see the same ones every day commuting. Always a line of cars piled up behind doing exactly the speed limit.

There is no driver shortage; that is a myth created by the common carrier trucking industry to keep the flow of student drivers through their doors. It keeps pay low, they get government grants for continually training drivers etc. If there was a real economic shortage, the pay would be going up. Th big OTR carriers are a revolving door with well over 100% turnover rates and it's designed that way.

Agreed. Freight haulers are the bad ones from what I've experienced. Hazmat tanker drivers tend to be excellent. Good thing too.

I think texting and driving is WAY worse of an issue.

Just the other day some girl was texting and driving down the freeway swerving. I had to do something before she crashed. So I pulled along side of her and rolled down my window and threw my beer can at her to get her to stop.

Unfortunately, I've noticed that too. There are still a lot of very courteous truckers out there, and if you treat them with respect they respond the same, but then there are more and more that are just like car drivers. The whole thing of passing each other (and corking both lanes) while the passing truck only does 1 mph faster than the slow truck is insane. Especially on our 80-mph toll road where neither truck will ever exceed 75. Sometimes you find them doing it and the *fast* truck is only running 65-70.

In California trucks and anything towing a trailer are limited to the right lane only. It's a real fiasco with cars and trucks trying to merge with trucks already on the hwy and doing the speed limit.

I'd rather they be in the left lane.

I drove through Richmond,Va on 6 lane I-95 yesterday both north and southbound in an 18 wheeler and was intermittently in the left lane from mile marker 52 to mile marker 82 where there are NO lane restrictions! The speed limit varies from 55 to 60 mph along this stretch and literally goes down the center of Richmond. The left lane is the safest lane for a large truck to be in on this section of I-95 as we don't have to deal with vehicles exiting and entering the Highway and those who are in the center lane who suddenly realize, this is the exit I need to get off on, stab they're brakes and do a mad dash onto the exit ramp. I typically run a few mph over and didn't hold anyone up but sometimes they're is an A-- hole that just wants to occupy the real estate I have at the time and when they do get around they realize the traffic in front of me is about like they had a moment earlier only now they have an 80,000 lb vehicle behind them instead of in front of them. The vast majority of truckers are courteous and safe but the few some encounter that aren't, makes them all look bad to some. The OP has a huge Jones for truckers, and starts a negative thread about them quite often here.
