This occurs regularly in the hip-hop-flip-flop town of Austin. Not sure if it's stupidity, talking on the phone while driving, or just cluelessness. And not just from the eco-crowd either. Subs, Escalades too. Some don't even attempt to speed up, merge or yield.

They'll wait, then pull right out into your lane on a major thoroughfare when you and 40 others are traveling 65mph. As if they can't be bothered with waiting! Appears they also have a problem with impulse control.

65mph = 95ft/sec. Which is a football field in ~ 3.1sec.

I had one such idiot honking at me for not pulling out into such traffic on a crowded major thoroughfare. He's obviously clueless that two physical bodies cannot occupy the same space at the same time. Obviously impatient & impulsive. So he pulls upside to the left of me, blocking my view, because he's tired of waiting. Now I have no choice but to wait until he moves. I'm not about to risk my life nor my vehicle. He was in an open Jeep, packed full of his HS friends. I wonder when his ticket will get punched?

They're impulsive & care-less. And that makes them danger-ous.

Hey I was just minding my own business. I wouldn't consider me a wannabe big rig cownboy since I have a Peterbilt sitting in my yard.

I'm not sure why some are faulting you, Chris. Driving 32 mph in 55 mph zone is passive-aggressive behavior and just plain not safe and proper, let alone pulling out in front of someone to do just that. I can see someone going a couple mph under but upwards of 20 mph under on a two-lane highway? That's just being passive-aggressive.

I agree. The Prius driver is the root cause [censored] here.

He waited till I was about 200 ft from the intersection when he decided to pull right out in front of me. I had a feeling that he was stupid so I had anticipated him pulling a stunt like this. So I hit the brakes and followed him through the no passing zone @ 38mph.

I noticed several bumper stickers on his car and none were from any group that I agree with.

So we continue on now @ 38mph and he brake checked me although I had left plenty of space between us. Now we are going 32mph in a 55 zone.

Got to the passing zone so I dropped the 6.9L diesel into 3rd and passed this clown. Shifted to 4th and as I looked in my mirror I could see his headlights through my diesel smoke.

Your point?
There seem to be two types of prius drivers. Those that want to drive fast for lower cost and others who want to make everyone else miserable.

His point was that he got the sucker back and gave him what he deserved.

Whether the driver is trying to save money or make everyone miserable equals the same result -- taking the man's right of way and NOT getting up to speed...that's just Disrespectful, selfish and it seems the "Prius way".

I think it was just a humorous return; it's not like the OP said 'hey, I think I'm going to smoke out a rius driver today, but as he was following him he acted impulsively.
I know I've done the same, when I was driving a fast car, to squeal past them when I had the chance. it just makes you feel good at the moment.
I had a prius driver the other day merging onto the hwy next to me, he refused to yield; I was unable to move left and couldn't slow down due to cars on both sides. I had no choice but to speed WAY up to get in front of the non-yielding prius.
I like to think that idiot drivers aren't really idiots; they just do idiotic things due to inattentiveness or whatnot.

The problem with "returning favors" like this is it doesn't solve the problem. To begin with, road rage almost always involves at least two drivers. Maybe the Prius committed the first wrong in this situation by pulling out. Maybe if the pickup driver would have allowed the Prius driver more space, the Prius driver might have gotten up to speed faster. The Prius driver apparently brake-checked the pickup truck driver; obviously the pickup truck driver was following close enough to have been brake-checked. See also: tailgating. Following up one wrong with another hardly seems the right thing to do.

And as stated before, the Prius driver is probably on an internet forum writing a post, "Some clown in a smoking pickup..." And they're all posting about how the "diesel truck way" is driving aggressively like they own the road and spewing their diesel soot all over everything.

C'mon guys, we all have to occupy the same space on the road. The last thing we need out there are clowns, whether they're in a Prius -or- a pickup truck.

In most places I've seen, Priuses are the ones doing 90 in the left lane on the highway... The ones that drive me nuts are the generic, incompetent drivers that do 45 in a 55 because they're nervous, or do 55 and drop to 40 for every slight curve. Those types come in all vehicles, and are usually met with the sound of howling WOT V8 when I find a passing zone.

Many of these "other" drivers are a bit nervous and can be frustrating. However what do you want, all of them off the road because you might feel they are not "fast" enough for you? The highway is not a race track. We all need to be a bit more tolerant of all types of drivers.

I agree, I'm fine with them doing the speed limit, or a just under. But when they're doing 10 or more under in perfect weather, especially if they're 90 years old, they probably shouldn't be driving anymore.

A bit nervous is one thing, but when they look flat out terrified while driving, and hit their brakes when there's an oncoming car, I have an issue with it.

Heck, I'm that guy that will do 60 in a 65 on the highway to save gas (Jeep loses mileage very quickly past 60-ish). However, I won't do it on a road where people can't pass me easily, etc. In addition, if I have something like a large truck coming up behind me, I'll speed up until they have an opportunity to pass.

^^^ Very well said.
I have nothing against people going slow in the slow lane. But when they go 10 under in the left lane, that's just annoying.

I agree with that. I saw it this morning. Would not move over. I think some of these driver's are "punishing" anyone who is not hypermiling.

I'm pretty sure of one thing: hitting them with "the sound of a howling WOT V8" probably isn't going to help them be LESS nervous behind the wheel...

I'm all for a smooth flow of traffic on the road, and I'm all for everyone driving a similar speed. Those who drive significantly slower than others are dangerous to themselves and others. Still, when you go WOT to pass just to make a point (and blowing diesel smoke for extra points), you're not making the point you're trying to make, I assure you.

The message received is "this clown in a Jeep is driving aggressively", and probably just reinforces their reasons for being nervous behind the wheel.

And by exacting his "revenge" he lowered himself to the level of the person he called a clown to begin with. So now instead of having one idiot on the road, there are two with the same childish mentality.

A mature adult wouldn't worry about getting the "sucker" back, and wouldn't get their jollies from doing something like that. Getting the "sucker" back sounds like something a 5 year old would be concerned with, but not a mature adult.

In my case, I don't generally floor it when passing on a highway, unless it's necessary (which is rare). However, on a 2 lane road with short-ish passing zones between corners, you can bet I'm not staying on the opposite side of the road any longer than necessary, so passing happens at WOT.

I gotcha. I read "passing zone" as an opportunity to pass (such as the next lane is clear), but now I see how you are saying "passing zone" such as on a 2-lane road. I'll certainly yield to that concept.

Still, one never knows why folks drive the way they do. Maybe the retard who just cut me off is driving his wife to the emergency room. Or maybe "that guy" driving 10 under is just getting back into driving after 5 months of recovery from a horrific head-on collision or something. While there are any number of silly and possibly inexcusable reasons for driving aggressively or not keeping up with traffic, there also are a number of fairly legitimate reasons why other folks might not drive exactly like "I" might drive.

Ok, so how to YOU propose to let a person (such as the Prius driver in this case) know they are in the wrong? They will probably keep driving the same way unless they are made aware of what they did.

What do I want?

I want people that are going to use the freeway to drive at reasonable freeway speed. If you are going to drive surface street speeds, stay on the surface streets or at least in the very far right lane. Trucks are prohibited from the far left lane here. That's all I need is to get squashed by a injection well salt water truck going 85 mph because someone wants to drive 35 mph in the left center lane (out of 5 lanes). Besides, you get better mpg city in a Prius anyway.

I also want a beer. I can fulfill that want. I can't make idiots in the left 3 lanes travel at reasonable speeds so I think I'll have a beer.

Do you actually think that the sort of thing we're talking about here let's the person know they are in the wrong? Seems like a tap on the horn is more "informative" than speeding by them.

I've discovered breaking traction in their vicinity really freaks them out
