Should the 200 series land cruiser use 0w-20?

Toyota recommends 0w-20. In other countries thicker oil has been recommended for older land cruisers. In the US we had a 5w-30 recommendation for the 1fz-fe when other parts of the world had thicker recommendations. The daily driver of the 200 series uses it for mixed city and highway drives, 60-70% city use. It accrues about 11k miles/year and is located in northern New York State. It is entirely stock. Would a 0w-30 or 0w-40 be a bad idea, specifically Castrol? I'm an oil newbie but higher hths in exchange for slightly less gas mileage would be an ok trade. Historically the land cruiser has been easy on oil with prior engines. I'm suspicious that Toyota has made this thin recommendation from government pressures on fuel economy as many of their new engines use 0w-20. Your input and expertise is appreciated.

Absolutely "government pressures on fuel economy"

0w-40, 5w-30 or whatever you prefer will work just fine.

I would use a 0W30 on that vintage Land Cruiser...specification of the engine as 0W20 makes oil inventory easier on the dealer, but I doubt that it's of benefit to the consumer...

And once "Toyota Care" is finished changing the oil on my Tundra - I'll probably go to a 5W30 or a 0W30.

Not exactly the same but gee whiz. Are you really considering using 0W-20 or just trolling?

That question was about an 80-series LC. Unambiguous - the straight six engine in that truck specified an SH oil, in 10W30 or 5W30...so...

This poster's question was about a 200-series, which is the 2007 and up...so, initially spec'd for a 5W30, and early models back-spec'd for a 0W20. New models spec'd for a 0W20...but it's a very similar V-8 to what's in my Tundra...

It would help to know what year the truck in question was built, but still...

My old 1MZ-FE was back-specified to 5W-20. I ran it from about the 100,000 mile point to nearly 300,000 miles using that oil. It is still running today. If that engine didn't self-destruct on -20 oil then IMO any "suspicious" motives are unwarranted (the rest of the world be danged).

The 200 series has the 5.7l just like the 1794 edition Tundra- and that is a beautifully designed truck. Some guys on the tundra forum use 5w-30 in the 5.7l. My suspicions would mean domestic engines would have problems and the 0w-20 recommendation is likely too new to know.

I would go with the original specified oil, 30 weight. 0w30 sounds like a good choice to me.

0W-XX of your choice. there is enough wear to make any oil "fit" and whatever keeps it quiet and happy is just fine

2015?

That's a sweet ride, then. The new Land Cruisers are terrific, but the price tag was simply beyond my reach.

I think you're fine going to an XXW30 in your Land Cruiser. Is it better? Obviously that's the crux of the debate, but that's what I plan to do with the Tundra. Overly conservative, yeah, probably. Too thick? Many here will say so...but I'm not in that number...
