S2878XL vs S4967XL

Recently I looked up the recommended STP XL filter on the ‘23 Sienna at Autozone and the suggestion was the S2878XL instead of the S4967XL. Used the S4967XL on our previous ‘21 Sienna so not sure what’s the different. It’s the exact same engine in both years and the 4967’s are still available at Autozone. Anyone know what the deal is?

Ended up with MicroGard Select MSL10332 instead but was still curious.

For some applications AZ STP filters use their own application #, not seen elsewhere. Another example is the STP S2808, it is the popular 9688 or 3593a. Using X reference.com the S2878 crosses to the more well known #, 4967.

AutoZone has not been showing me the correct filter for my Volvo for example, although I think it'll fit, so take what they "recommend" for your vehicle with caution. I recognize you are doing that since you're asking here. I suspect the 4967 is what you want to use since it's slightly cheaper.

The Autozone is slightly closer to my house so all things being equal I’d use the correct STP XL over the MG Select. And the Autozone has self check out so I don’t have to talk to the store reps. The O’Reilly’s in my town is more like an old store auto parts store. With Walmart’s filter stock low I imagine I’ll be using auto parts store more often now.

Understood, I have some STP filters too & no Autozones near me but I am heading to O'reilly's to get a Microgard since I just received a $5 off $10 coupon. Can't complain about the cost with the bundle deal being so cheap if you buy it that way.

Picked up both of these today. The S4976XL is listed for both my wife’s 2007 RAV4 AZ engine as well as BIL 2007 Camry with the same engine.

The S2878XL is listed for my 23 Sienna.

From what I gather off this website is that sizing has to do with filter orientation as installed. Both the Camry and RAV4 has its oil filter thread upwards. Therefore can take the larger size, and potentially an oversized filter. The Sienna is horizontally oriented, thus less wiggle room. The other thing I picked up was the inflow/outflow pressure differential is less with a smaller filter. This may help with a hybrid engine in the Sienna.

Should be less pressure differential with a larger filter if they are using the same filtering media. More media area of the same media means less dP vs flow.

Thanks for the comparison pics. I actually would rather have a smaller 2878 filter after looking at these. It’s a tight squeeze in the Sienna’s oil change access area with the horizontal mount. A nice compact filter is ideal.

I know Fram does call for a PH4967 for both those applications. The “new” Toyota N1 filter introduced in 2018 on the A25A/M20A engines is a touch smaller, and has slots vs. holes on the baseplate. Wix and PG have different filters, forget the number.

Definitely looks like the smaller MSL10332 & S2878XL will be the filters for the Toyota. Thanks for the comparison pics. Very helpful.

Added an N1 filter to a Walmart order for comparison. Based on @OilStained pics the MSL10332 and S2878XL are similar in size. Additional pics here referencing the N1 and MSL10332. Also similar in size.

I just change it based on the MM.

Out: 90915-yzzn1, Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0w20
In: Mobil 1-203a (import) Mobil 1 ESP 0w20


Normally don't track or C&P on this vehicle but I saw a post talking about these Denso filters separating at ths glued base and had to cut it and see.

I had replaced the denso with another (newer) one, but upon cutting this one open, I swapped it for the Mobil 1 filter. The newer Denso looked fine internally...

I only play the oil filter quality Wac-O-Mole game so much. I’m running the N1 currently in the Sienna Hybrid and I’ll throw this new one on for a future oil change without worry. It is the last one I have in stock, but I’m not going to throw it out.
