Getting Bids on a new roof on my home, has 3 layers that need to be stripped, and decked, what is a good shingle and what is a good deck,7-16 cdx or 1/2 osb,,currently I am confused on this ,in central Wis. as the weather is brutal, any advise is good, brands types etc..BL

OSB bites. CDX means one side is graded C, the other D and X is for X-terior. I dunno if OSB is even rated for exterior.

Are standing seam metal roofs available in Wisconsin? They are popular here, particularly in high wind areas.

We have one, and I expect that it will easily outlive me. Our neighbor put a shingle roof on his new home, and after one year, half of it blew off.

OSB is a rated exterior sheathing.. it still sucks though. I'd use nothing thinner than 5/8" on the roof. 5/8" CDX or OSB (which isn't bad at 5/8"). if you must go thinner, use 1/2" CDX.. I've been on a couple of roofs decked with 7/16 OSB... scary, it deflects under your feet.

Stay away from thin sheeting. Like Bret says 5/8 cdx is about the minimum that should be used. OSB is just another brand of particleboard and I really don't believe you want that above your head.

Maybe OSB under siding for a spec house, but I would say not for roofing. The newer stuff is much improved, but still.....

Expensive is the 23/32" CDX.....but what a killer roof! Nothing thinner than 5/8", not even 9/16".

Pay up for the best shingles, make sure they have a system for locking or bonding tabs if composite....

Dimensional shake (or architectual) shingles now seem to be the norm in our neighborhood. They're rated for 30 years, better than the best three-tab shingles formerly used and rated at 25 years. The dimensional shingles have no slit, so they are more sturdy and shed water better.

Metal roofing should get consideration. I saw one on our neighborhood recently, so I guess people in suburbia are beginning to warm up to that option.

Also consider using a 3 foot wide layer of water shield at the eaves and valleys for the times you can get unique weather for ice damming.
