Restore and protect opinions

I don't see any point in waiting for a car to get get coked or sludged up. I applaud all reasonable attempts to keep engines clean and oil consumption down. R&P is a very reasonable way to do it.
It's called "restore & protect"
Unless this oil offers any noteworthy protection over other full synthetics then I don't think it matters.

Deposits don't come out of the blue at a certain mileage, they start forming from day 1.
Use quality oil and do regular OCI.
I've seend plenty of high milage motors look spotless inside even before restore&protect was introduced.

This isn't always the case. Examples on this site of people who ran good oils from day one and still had HPL or SS dissolve plenty of nasties into the filters. It happened to me on my Sport trac.

But not me … perhaps Mobil 1 AP was one of their best ever …
Any Mobil 1 product should keep rings/engines pretty clean at reasonable OCI IMO.

What @Jetronic said though is true in that all engines start to form them from the very beginning. Oils are meant to keep them at bay but they still form over time, even if slowly.

The higher solvency oils using esters/ANs are noted to keep engines cleaner by running cleaner.

R&P is a unique oil designed to clean piston deposits and carbon. Few if any oils can actually clean piston deposits.

I’d bet money that AP had AN with PAO - remember it started $50/jug before working downward to clearance …

Valvoline Restore & Protect threads focus are understandably about removing carbon and cleaning - but for long term use I want to be impressed with Restore and Protect’s ability to control wear which no one is talking about ? Otherwise , I may be inclined to use Restore & Protect for 2 or 3 shorter OCI’s of 3K to 4K miles for max cleaning before switching back to Mobil 1 EP or ESP series oils again .

My guess is most Mobil 1 grades use AN being XOM makes them. I think that has been their go to for solvency over esters in some grades. Just a guess.
Ok seriously what is AN? Would you believe it's not on the acronyms page? Not the main post anyways.

I think that's why the hundreds of thousands of Hyundai/Kias made in the last 12 years with the Theta II are a perfect test for both of this oil's claimed properties. Though I'm not sure how one measures improvement or "control" on wear over time.

If after 5 oil changes (and some other tricks) I'm not seeing my consumption budge one bit, well then I feel I would be fast approaching the reasonable conclusion that stuck piston rings are NOT the problem causing my car to burn oil.

FWIW, 5000 miles of use so far and 2 flushes with BG EPR there's been no improvement. I think it's fair to say, most people would call it quits by now but, I love maintaining my car too much to quit trying. I think as long I'm wasting copious amounts of money and time, then the ends justify the means.

That seems to be an assumed trait of this oil. At its core it’s just another motor oil, with a cool new cleaning feature.
