PUP or VRP

I know at some point years ago a PUP formula change was talked about here. @SubieRubyRoo might know.

I think that formula change lowered calcium and ZDDP and increased Moly. I have the 5-year-old VOA of Project Form.
Can better poor point be a sure sign of GTL compared to group 3? Ultra's pour point is pretty impressive. Of course compared to Valvoline it's impressive, not compared to something like HPL. HPL's 0w16 is good enough for Antarctica lol

If I remember at one time the Noack was crazy low too.

I don't know if one should take project Farms test seriously or not, but in that NOAK test is where Ultra beat amsol Signature Series. It hardly evaporated in crazy heat. Then Signature Series beat It narrowly in the remaining two tests

Old formulae Ultra. Since then, Moly, Boron, and Magnesium have increased and ZDDP and calcium have decreased. TBN hasn't changed

The big change was from the charcoal bottles to the yellow bottles from what I know (which is mostly anecdotal). However, as my UOAs on the ‘11 Fusion I had show, the yellow bottle went over 17k miles and was just out of grade but everything else looked great.

PUP is a great, if under-marketed gem and if HPL hadn’t changed the game on BITOG, I would likely still be using it even if it’s not the easiest to come by. I tried Ravenol’s “best” and was severely underwhelmed. Even PPE 0w40 outperformed the Ravenol…

Do the numbers in the VOA above look familiar to you?

If you really want to know my honest opinion, a VOA doesn’t tell you anything about how an oil will perform. I drove the tires off that Fusion (115k in 4 years) and used PUP 0 & 5w20 exclusively. Started at like 6k intervals and worked up to 17.1k methodically, roughly 60% city 40% hwy. For a ~$25/5qt product, I doubt there’s anything else that could have matched that performance. You need real-world data, in your engine and driving habits, to understand what a given oil can do. In the MZR engine, IMO, there’s probably no other oil that can match the $/mi performance that PUP gave me.

However, the VOA wasn’t what proved that fact. The UOAs that showed the oil was still serviceable at the end of the OCI was what mattered. 👍🏻

Those old Fusions and Escapes were tanks. Ford is putting out crap now

Here is an UOA of PUP 5W-30 for ~6700 miles and M1 5W-30 ESP for ~5600 miles. The Pup is SP and the Mobil 1 is SN. Both were descent. They were run during the same seasons one year apart. The PUP has lower fuel dilution even going 1000 miles longer, can't say why for sure. I would have no problem to continue to use either but for now I'll continue to use the PUP since my Walmart is finally carrying it at a reasonable price and the UOA is good and being GTL is interesting.

Boron is usually higher for Ultra Platinum 5w-30 . 186 for V.O.A. in T.M.O.G. video and 184 for U.O.A. posted by Midwest F150 at Y.T.. Both are S.P. , GF-6A .

I'm in a similar situation. I bought my vehicle with 19,988 miles on it and dealer oc's by the previous owner. I've been running PUP for 4 oc and am at 43,300 miles and about due for another oc.

VRP is tempting, but it uses about 3/4 of a quart in about 3,500 miles, so it's not excessively bad re oil consumption, so I bought another 5qt jug of PUP.

If oil consumption Increases significantly then I'll do 20k miles of VRP.
Generally speaking, that usage seems a little concerning for a 43k mile engine. VRP would definitely be worth a try to get consumption back to zero. What vehicle is this?
