PUP or VRP

Here's my 2016 Honda CR-V with the K24W 2.4 L gasoline engine, oil change history to date:

Build date 10 / 2015 so factory oil was put in sometime in that month.

1st oc 6,051 miles 2/14/2017 at Honda dealer, 478 days +/- 15 days & 6,051 miles on previous oil

2nd oc 11,599 miles 1/20/2018 at Honda dealer, 381 days & 5,548 miles on previous oil

3rd oc 15,726 miles 4/22/2019 at Honda dealer, 457 days & 4,127 miles on previous oil

4th oc 19,877 miles 2/15/2020 at Honda dealer, 299 days & 4,062 miles on previous oil. Note, I punched this vehicle 3 days later on 2/18/2020 with 19,877 miles on it.

5th oc 23,558 miles 10/21/2020 at Honda dealer ( free oc ) 250 days & 3,770 miles on previous oil

6th oc 27, 186 miles 8/27/2021 Note, I installed a Fumoto 90 degree angle drain valve, put in PUP 0W-20 & a Fram Ultra XG7317, 309 days and 3,628 miles on previous oil

7th oc 30,704 miles 6/11/22, 287 days and 3,518 miles on previous oil, put in PUP 0W-20 & a Fram Ultra

8th oc 34, 388 miles 3/21/2023, 283 days and 3,685 miles on previous oil, put in PUP 0W-20 & a Fram Ultra

9th oc 37,905 miles 12/8/23, 262 days and 3,516 miles on previous oil, put in PUP 0W-20, left Fram Ultra oil filter on for a second use because it was too cold outside to mess with it and Honda says its OK for two oc.

10th oc 41,451 miles 10/14/2024, 311 days and 3,546 miles on previous oil, put in PUP 0W-20 & a Fram Ultra

11th oc 44,635 miles 7/21/2025, 280 days & 3,184 miles on previous oil, put in PUP 0W-20 & a Fram Ultra

---------------

1st through 5th oc were all done at the same Honda dealer. So until 27,186 miles it got whatever the dealer used.

I have been changing the oil as soon as the oil life drops to 20 % remaining.

Note, at last oc, I had been using PUP 0W-20 for 17,449 miles, and before I started using PUP there was some yellow varnish on the dip-stick. When I checked the level after filling during this last change, I noticed that there is not any yellow varnish anywhere on the dip-stick now. The entire length is shinny silver steel.

I don't know how that translates into cleaning high temperature areas like piston rings, but it sure cleaned the dip stick after 17, 449 miles.

Lake farms out all of his testing, from what I been lead to understand. Not sure if that’s 100% or not; He does interpretations of the data. There are multiple videos on YT where he’s at HPL’s facility.
Yeah, the level of testing he has available for UOAs is very different from what HPL has in their lab.

Hopefully the price remains the same until next PENNZOIL rebate . Still have to use the $30 to purchase online only .

Will likely use the $30 rebate to purchase 5 gallon jug of the ULTRA PLATINUM 0w-20 . Waiting on the S.Q. , GF-7A . Will be doing O.C. for each '25 KIA Soul in OCTOBER .

I picked up two 5 litre jugs of PUP 5W-30 at Canadian Tire this evening. It's currently on sale at $43 ($28 with the rebate)
I've used it in the 2.7 Ranger from the first oil change onward.
In the Mustang, PPE 5W-40 for the last 4 years after using Amsoil SS 10W-30 for the first 10 years. Oil consumption dropped from 1/2 litre per year to zero noticeable consumption after the switch to Euro.
Pennzoil might not be the flavour of the month any longer but it has served me well over the years.

LSJ mentioned that during switching brands, left over from previous might not get along with the new very well. So that's another reason to stay with PUP, as far as I'm concerned.

About 3/4 of a quart topping off to keep the level covering the top hole in the dip-stick is not too bad for an engine with low tension piston rings.

Oil has to get to the cylinder walls to lube and clean. It may be unrealistic to expect 100 % to end up back in the sump.

4 pistons moving up and down at hundreds or thousands of times per minute for about 3,500 miles, is actually a heck of a lot of surface travel to lube. And with low tension rings, only having about 3/4 of a quart loss is impressive, when you consider that the oil really does always have to be there for every one of those strokes for all 4 pistons.

If oil used does not significantly increase, I'm staying with PUP 0W-20.

If it ever looses more than 1.5 quarts over 3,500 miles, then I'll switch to VRP.
