Record Surge in Past-Due Student Loans Adds to US Debt Burden

Agree, but there is sometimes an element of predatory lending to the vulnerable. I know a gal who holds a PhD, maybe a double PhD, in a Social Science discipline. Her family offered no fiscal guidance when the loans were offered. A huge mess that hounded, perhaps crippled, her for many years. The worst part is, I am not sure she has learned her lesson.

Personal finance needs to be taught starting in grade school and continued through HS.
If she is "that" smart, its on her to figure out that she must repay what she borrows, whoever her family is. Its not rocket science.

If she still hasn't learned her lesson by now, its a character flaw.

You can be smart in one or more disciplines, but that doesn't make you financial smart.

Almost every company with an HR department would benefit from eliminating it. The legal and regulatory functions could be farmed out for a fraction of the cost of employing the mostly female social engineers.
If this were true, why aren't companies doing so?
I can tell you one reason: supplying the company with qualified talent is critical to success. Companies are all about people.

Trades are what young adults should go into. HaHa people have no clue to be successful. Ran commercial and industrial hvac for 40 years. 38 years of continuing education some on mine time and contractor/ union. Work on a roof at -40° wind chill for days or roof 160° or a mechanical room over 100°. Education and theory worked for me. Made me more valuable to the contractor and union. Late 1970s and 1980s when work got bad never missed a day. Factories that walking in 5 minutes i was dirty. Called out at 2 am working 24 hrs straight. 5 minute job that lasted two weeks and there were more than a few. Construction is one of the only jobs that pays well for a excon, exboxer or exaddic. The job the contractor and union wouldn't trade a minute.

Fitter30,

What 5 min job would last 2 weeks ?

Just wondering….

Trades are great if you like working with your hands.

I grew up with everyone I knew working trades. By 50 there bodies were destroyed. Its an honest days work, but work it is. Not for everyone for sure. When I was young they all told me to go to college. I am happy I did.

Of course Barista doesn't pay so well so everything in life is a trade off.

Another stat I heard today on one of the many financial podcasts I listen is per the BLS labor reports all job growth in the last year has been healthcare, government and education?

I imagine some in the 50+ category have their own loans and parent plus loans.
Good point, but does it matter who they borrowed for? The biggest chest thumpers in this thread are the 50+ crowd so it’s quite ironic to see this age group defaulting on student loans the most. I thought they were so responsible, I guess it’s mostly empty chest thumping.

Not really. Just pointing it out as a potential source.

Yeah. It takes deliberate effort to remember your own mistakes when addressing others about theirs.

In normal countries the government funds education, it doesn't burden the student for the rest of their lives.

But the system we have is to inject unlimited money into universities using the students as a conduit with zero risk to the universities or the government screwing the students in the process.
IM glad I dont live in those countries. That isnt all they give away from their citizens paychecks.

Been that way since the beginning of time. Mentoring has to be accepted and slackers need to be called out.

I go back to what I've said before, kids are getting bad advice or no advice. This isn't all on 18 YOs with no life experience. Hello parents?
Fair enough, but kids don't get to pick their parents. As already stated above.
Survival of the fittest.

Not everyone will be successful in life and no one is owed anything. Survive or fail. If you are going to blame the parents so be it. That doesnt mean other parents (or government) have to take that adult child under their wings and pay for them. You either want to be free or not.
Free country, no one is responsible for you but yourself.

Wife is a Director in our state's student loan agency. She specifically works in the default aversion department. She made a good point about all this. For years the previous administration told borrowers they owed nothing. The government basically put payments on hold for a few years. Well, when a young person who's struggling anyhow is told they can stop paying, they stop paying, and then other things in life fill that void and their income gets redirected. Then all of a sudden 4 years later the government says "We need those payments now" and there's no room in the budget for it.

I'm not saying it is OK to not pay. I'm just saying the government screwed the pooch on that. Loan forgiveness programs and stopping payments due for 4 years both worked together to create this disaster.

Well, unless you’re a government worker or a corporation that’s too big to fail.

I was working a shut down at a nuclear power plant about 12 years ago. I was part of the anaconda crew tasked with going deep in the bowels of the reactor cavity. A mistake in the paperwork, from when the plant was built 30 years prior, resulted in the lock and tag of the wrong valve. This was caught mere minutes from that pipe getting worked on. What should've been a 10-15 minute patch job turned into a bureaucratical nightmare with the NRC and 11 days of fixing paperwork, cutting and welding new pipes and valves, and x-ray and testing conducted. I was hanging upside down for a good bit of those welds, using a mirror and odd cup and wire angles (TIG) to get the underside of the pipe that was just a few inches off the floor and wall. There were 12 of us on that crew diving in 2 hour increments twice a day. They had to bring in another crew to finish the welds on the last day after we'd all hit our cap on radiation exposure.

There was another incident in the turbine building where a valve had to be replaced in a 10" drain line. This pipe was 12 ft off the ground and against a wall. A crew replaced it but was discovered during final testing that it was installed backwards. This was 2 days before the reactor was to be fired back up. Given I had hit my cap on radiation, I was put on that crew to fix that issue. I worked an 18 hour shift on double time Sunday cutting out and reinstalling that valve along with 2 others.

Why not? Their populations seem to be more prosperous and happier.
"seem" is subjective more so on what is in the media. Both in the UK and some Asian countries many would love to come here. I know many happy people here in the USA. Actually I dont know anyone unhappy if that makes any sense.

Some time ago I knew of some in the UK who thought owning a boat was a luxury. Im talking engineering professionals that design HVAC systems for commercial buildings and skyscrapers. (Im sure its gotten better?)

I know a family, well off in Asia who waited 10+ years to legally come here

I know a motorcycle victim accident from our northern neighbor Canada who at one time was seeking to come to the USA for an MRI because the waiting list for one was many months long there. (Im sure that has gotten better now?) I was in disbelief. I go to a doctor, they order an MRI (and I had a lot) before I leave the doctors office or they call me within a day with an appointment for the following week.
