Did your parents ever cheat you out of money or steal money from you?

I saw this question elsewhere among a group of younger people and started thinking about how more mature folks would respond. I'm not talking about mom taking $20 for gas. Although I did siphon gas from mom's car when I needed gas for my dirt bike, and then put a gal back when I filled the jug. Drove her crazy as her MPG was all over the place and sometimes she was beside herself with joy when her Ford Fairmont 4cyl/4sp got 40MPG! (when I replaced the gas)

Anyway, did your parents in essence, steal funds that were set up for you? Mine did. My grandparents gave each of us (4 boys) a very modest college fund, which was put in savings, and they added to it each year, my contributions were on the order of 5c or so every so often :) . All 4 of the boys had their college funds 'used up' by my parents, through deliberate choices.

When I finally went to college, I was told to go to a cheap community college or state university. Western CT State Univ for a year (could not stand it, but could afford) and then ERAU in FL for 5 years. Full time, then part time as money allowed, via student loans and one heck of a financial struggle. Parents never paid a cent.

In the end I would not change a thing and it worked out perfectly. I had to fully make it on my own, which led to some fantastic college jobs, From a bouncer at the Oyster pub late at night to a machine shop and outboard marine racing tech/various auto racing and engine development tech jobs.

One of the cool jobs:

Although not my pic, this is pretty much what we tested (although very modified for racing from this). Two stroke racing engines on Hydrostream boats. The factory ported the engines and we tested oil ratios for maximum output (top speed) and usefulness. Among other tests. My job was to change powerheads and to drive the boats to ensure they were running well prior to testing. I never went over 80MPH as it terrified me.

Another cool job was dyno development of roller camshafts, that eventually ended up in this engine:

Maybe, to some extent. But it made no difference because I went off the deep end anyways. As they say, "Blame yourself!" Those words ring true in my case.

Love that race car. Is it a Can-Am car?

My mother sued the drunk driver that about killed me.
She forced me to sign a paper that I would pay her thousands of dollars. Her reasoning was that she had to take off work for all of my facial reconstructive surgeries but little did I know at the time she was getting paid regardless of her attendance (I was a young teen at the time). My mother didn't have a shred of human decency and is why I have no communication today. Her loss! Can't pick our parents but certainly have a choice of relationship as an adult. My father was very good to me. I remember him giving me $130 from some money my grand aunt and uncle left him. See the difference?

My brother had a 79 Fairmont by the way. Maroon red everywhere.

When I was an older toddler my parents went through a financial crises. It was apparently pretty bad. They had to break open my piggy bank. They told me they really needed it. OK with me.

My parents were upright and respectful people. They sacrificed for me. Never ripped me off and were as generous as they could be.

I miss them.

My ex's dad did. He would always expect her to buy things for him like TVs because he sucked with money management . She also took over a car note for a car he bought but couldn't keep up the payments but he never showed her the bill.

Yes. :ROFLMAO:

My mother did, steal from me that is, and my other siblings. In more ways than one. As an example, I got a letter in the mail about collections for a gas bill, to an address I did not recognize. Low and behold, she used my SS# to start the account, name etc. I did not put 2 and 2 together and reported the fraud, next day she called me about it, so I knew what the deal was. She did the same things with my sisters.

She also scammed welfare, in reporting that my dad was not supporting me (and her), and got food stamps and the like, based on the "non support". This was for 7+ years. I am not sure of why it took so long, namely because my dad was a bookie and had no income on the books............but anyway, he ended up having to pay back all of what "he" owed, despite the fact that he paid for all of my stuff, the rent at my moms house, all the bills, etc. The only thing she paid for was her cigarettes, gas, and whatever liquor she was wanting at the time. All while being a over the phone sex worker whcih I will add she did not hide.

Of course all of his support was in cash, this was before we had online and over the phone bill payments, so what was he supposed to do? Tell them he made money illegally? HA. He paid for it until the day he died on his couch, when I was 15, of atherosclerosis.

After he died, I was entilted to his SS benefits, which she took and used for whatever, while I had to get a job at Carls Jr to buy my own clothes.

Hope yall enjoyed this story, just icing on the cake so to speak.

No. Though both were educated, ethical people, they did struggle for many of their working years, due to recession, then ageism, etc. Growing up in very modest conditions as a result, I was determined to succeed. After many years of struggle, I had some success. I was able to help my parents in their later years, and became their full-time caregiver for their last few years.

I was fortunate to have wonderful parents, and I miss them.

That was very honorable of you, I'm sure you don't look back and think it was a chore to care for your parents but a time you wouldn't trade for anything.

Long ago, when i was a young man, I dated a girl who was living at home with her parents. One day she comes to me with a letter from a major bank, claiming that if she didn't pay up on a credit card she had, they would take her to court. HOWEVER, she never had that credit card and had never done business with that bank.

Well, to make a long story short, it turns out that she got a credit card solicitation in the mail that was intercepted by her mother. The mother applied for the credit card in the daughter's name, and when the credit card arrived, kept it for her own use. She ran up the credit charges to the credit limit, and never paid the bill. And the daughter never saw any of the mail. She worked during the day, and the dishonest mother collected the mail from the mailbox.

One day, the mother was in the hospital. The daughter got to see the day's mail, and saw the bank's demands for payment addressed to her.

Believe it or not, the daughter forgave her mother for this fraud.

My parents, no, but I knew a guy........
I knew a guy, older than me, who graduated from engineering college.
There was leftover money in his 'college fund'.
At the time, engineers weren't being hired. After continuing living in the crash pads common to "uni students", he realized he had to galvanize, get another place in the city and get some job.

He asked his dad for the remaining funds.
His father said there were none. He put it towards revamping the entrance to the house and bought his son a 1971 Dodge Charger with the 383 Magnum engine.
So, the guy had no job and a Charger he couldn't afford to keep in the city.
"Thanks Dad", was his button.

CAR NOTE:
When I did the plugs for him ~50k, the LR plug, blocked by the steering gear, was original.
The center electrode was a nub. The ceramic had engine paint on it.
With 8 new plugs, the car idled at 1,200rpm.
