Illinois woman’s property tax is poised to pop from $756 to over $10,000

A lot of irony in the posts in here - taxation without representation claims, the legislature was passing laws to increase revenue, etc...

The great thing is legislatures keep great records about what they voted on - and who voted for what.

The bill that passed in 2007 was approved unanimously by both the house and senate in the Illinois general assembly. This includes the elected representatives from Montgomery County. Both voted yea to pass the bill, which the governor approved. Claims that this was some sort of program led by "one county" ring hollow when the votes were unanimous...

Instead of trying to increase revenues, the purpose of the bill was to provide landowners a way to reduce their property taxes by providing incentives to promote land conservation. Landowners who did so activated a significant reduction in property taxation.

In this case, the local county misapplied the law, and when it was discovered attempted to implement it per the letter of the law resulting in sensational headlines. Ironically, these folks work for a county board, who again is elected. Where is the lack of representation again?

Some construe that as the legislature is inept and responsible. The facts of this particular issue don't align with that narrative. The local county made its own mess here from an idea that the legislature had implemented to lower taxes - not to raise them.

The ability to critically think and analyze things seems to be lost in the rush to paint with overly broad brush that fits with pre-conceived concepts and narratives.

The state of Illinois certainly has its issues. The whole issue here is created by the local county in this case. Not the state. If this were a state issue, where are the news articles about similar stories from other counties in Illinois?

Thank you. Very well said. You nailed it perfect. And, when the population raised their concerns, the Montgomery County managers rescinded their self-made mess to re-evaluate it.
