Yes, I agree and your advice is most logical. This PCV situation sounds most critical. I will definitely get this replaced soon as I get to my sister and her hubby's shop. I am chancing it because the vehicle drives great and am getting 34-mpg overall in it so I'm hoping it will get me down to KS just fine. btw, if I do have it looked at and replace before my trip, would you guys know what the price range would be?

Kreen flush? Is that when you drain oil, fill with Kreen and idle for a few minutes, then flush the kreen?

Like another post here, is the state of the baffle any indication of how clean/dirty the engine is? or was I freaking out needlessly?

its just a ball valve that only lets air go one way. they get clogged...its a very simple but important thing. call and check price. some are cheap and some are a big deal, but i bet its cheap.


if you did the oil change and MMO before your trip you would see some great results. highway miles are good at cleaning. you could just dump in a pint of MMO before you go. it wont hurt a thing
 
Wow! a case of 12 Wix oil filters for $47.16 at fleetfilter.com, that works out to be just $3.93/filter (at least for my application). Much better than the $6.99/filter locally. Not sure what the shipping would be though, so have to take that into account.

Yes, oil change will be on Aug 2nd or 3rd and my trip would start on the 4th or 5th. It's good to hear that highway miles are good at cleaning

do it your self if you can or stop by any shop even a jiffy lube. most of the time is no big deal. like changing an air filter. sometimes its a task to do but most of the time its very simple. ask the autozone guy to point it out for you so you know what to replace(and if you can do it)
 
PCVs are cheap, even the OEM one will be less than $10.

Kreen is like MMO in that you add it to your existing oil and then drive with it. Many/most "flushes" you add to your oil right before changing it, idle it 20 minutes or so and then dump it along with the oil.

Sometimes a dirty baffle in a car DOES indicate a dirty engine, you just have to be careful not to jump to conclusions.

kreen is not a flush. i have driven 3k with kreen in my sump. adding more ever 1000 ofcoarse. but i think this car would be fine with something gentle like MMO. even if its not a sludge bucket mmo will not cause harm so there is no reason not to run an oci or 2
i would step up to 5w30 if its a 5/20 engine because MMO will thin the oil some

I'll work on it this weds/thurs when I'm off to see if I can follow that tutorial link you sent. Both my Toys use the same engine so I'm thinking I can use the corolla tutorial on the Celica.

Maybe he already HAS the "new" dipstick? Before I told someone to over fill it by .5 of a quart I'd really want to make sure that he had the old one.

good point but does a 1/2 qt really make any difference?


I didn't think so until I experimented and left one OCI midway between the mark. The oil consumption started at the end of that OCI. I also got a whole lot more of metal debris on magnetic drain during that OCI (5k miles of mixed city/hwy driving). I posted about it with pictures nearly 2 years ago. Coincidence? Maybe, but after reading that TSB about new dipstick, I realized the mid way on old dipstick was really below low on new dipstick and then everything made sense.

Yes, it is. There are instructions how to flush and do piston soak on the Kreen container itself, duh.
 
I successfully replaced the PCV valve on my Corolla today, thanks to the link supplied by Electrolover (Thanks)! Had to get the 16-mm thread from autozone because AAP didn't have the correct size. (the young salesman was a jerk also, not shopping at AAP anymore). anyway here's a few pics.

Now that I've looked at the diagram much closer, I see that it is in a similar position as the Corollas'. I will visit Autozone to see if they have a pcv valve for it and go from there.

I can't believe how simple it is to replace a part that is so critical to engine life. Thanks!
