Hello again gentlemen, and I was wondering if I would be ok to use PP 5W20 as my commute is 25 min highway driving to and from work, very little stop and go driving.

Thank you in advance

Sure. What kind of OCI's to you intend on running. Sounds like you have a very easy workload on your oil considering your car and commute. Unless you're intending on extending your OCI, I don't see any reason to move away from dino.

Since I live in SW PA, I planned/plan to go 7-7500 oci. I feel that usin synthetic may be less costly than conv every 4-5k.

thanks for the reply meangreen.

Thank you caterham for your reply. Yeah, I can get PP cheaper than the Honda 0w20 and [censored] OEM oil. There is a mom and pop hardware/plumbing supply bout 4 miles from me, that I got 4 cases of PP 5w20 SM flavor for like 20$ a case on clearance. Usin up some of my PYB 5W20 that I got at advance auto from my work account for $1 qt.

thank you again CATERHAM for the info.

If your goal is to save money by long OCIs, I would say try Mobil 1 EP or Castrol Edge, both of which are warrantied for long OCIs, as they contain TBN-retainers (Mg). On those oils you can go 15,000 miles without any problem.

Another oil that is very popular is Toyota Genuine 0W-20. While it's only warrantied for 10,000 miles and only for certain newest engines of Toyota, it seems to be of very high quality. You will also benefit from the 0W cold viscosity. Honda 0W-20 is not of as good quality.

The problem with PP is that it's not warrantied for long OCIs, as it doesn't contain TBN retainers (Mg) and/or it doesn't have a very large initial TBN. I wouldn't switch to PP just to extend the OCI by a couple of thousand miles. That won't save you any money. PP is appropriate for more protection of turbo or other demanding engines but not really for long OCIs.

I see and thanks for the info Gokhan. I may try some mobil 1 5w20, as whats the diff between mobil 1 syn and the EP?

thanks in advance

Mobil 1 Extended Performance (as opposed to regular Mobil 1) has Mg detergents in addition to the Ca detergents. With Mg detergents, TBN stays high longer (more mileage), and TBN is what prevents oil from becoming acidic and damaging the engine. It's the same story with Castrol Edge.

Another way of extending the oil life is to increase the starting TBN, to 12 or more by putting more detergents. This is done especially with certain ACEA categories (European oils). But there are limits to metal-compound content (ash limit) in API and many ACEA categories, and for that reason, this may not always be possible.

Basically there are three things that extend the oil life: (1) quality synthetic base oils, (2) TBN retention (Mg helps in that respect but there are also some concerns on possible increased wear with Mg), and (3) the initial TBN (which can be limited by the ash limit).

Actually the oil does not become acidic its just unable to deal with the acid produced by the combustion process. But splitting hairs.

Thanks guys and I think I will stick with my PYB 5W20 SM flavor that I have left.

Yes, that's what I meant but thanks for the clarification.

Note that the SN/GF-5 variety of PYB is great, better than the SM/GF-4 variety. PYB SN/GF-5 the highest-moly oil out there. See this VOA thread.
