Toyota Hybrid 2.5l oil options? Anything new?

Thanks. I plan on having a factory warranty on this till day zero, so Im going to have to play by the rules with the viscosity. Thus 0w16 & 0w20 is my only options. The 0w20 options might play a part here and there since it specifically states I have to change it out the next oil change is used... thus I have to or I should say THEY want me to run 0w16 as the main diet.

No disrespect, but every time someone references "warranty" when discussing oil, I scratch my head. When was the last time a warranty claim was denied because someone didn't use factory spec oil? Does Toyota pull a sample and send it out for analysis before approving a warranty claim? LOL.

Hey no doubt, I get it. But when these things are 60k and not even worth that IMO, I dont want to give them any reason to deny it. What if they ask for receipts? Do they even require us to keep receipts?

Then I think you should use what’s recommended and nothing else. I believe that by now you surely understand that this is not a technical requirement, nor is it a warranty requirement. But if you are that afraid of it, then by all means follow it because if you don’t, you will be the one person on earth whom they will ask you for documentation.

My owners manual states that a thicker viscosity is acceptable. I’m unsure as to what yours states but my vehicle is under warranty as well; no concerns here.

so we havent taken ownership of the vehicle yet, it was more-so of a looking into the future on what to use etc.

But I pulled the manual for the 2025 hybrid Grand Highlander with 2.5l and it says 0w8 lol and I can use 0w16 if I cannot find the 8wt. It does also have the same "foot note" that yours does about using high viscosity if the high speeds are seen. Its going to be a mostly driven highway vehicle, so Im guessing that meets the high speeds requirement for the different oil.

So all in all, you're sticking with 0w16. Thanks for the post! Have you done any oil analysis by any chance? I tried to look some up for the 2.5 hybrids, but I couldnt find any. Im going to search now that Im home, it's a bit easier on a PC vs cell.
I will be using 0w16 until the warranty is over, after that I will probably use 0w20. I never got an oil analysis done, I may do it for my sport car at some point, but I doubt I would ever get one for the RAV4, I am quite confident in my oil maintenance schedule.

I have a 2023 Rav4 Hybrid that just rolled 20K recently. Factory fill dumped at 900 miles. Have ran 0W16 and 0W20 back and forth with zero difference in fuel mileage between both oils. You living in Maryland, your winters are somewhat similar to ours in Pennsylvania from my area. My oil smells like fuel at 5K -- for peace of mind it gets changed.

Well this thread is going to be bunk ( at least for me... ) because the 2025 that we're getting... it now calls for 0w8 lol

(my opinion)....Use the 0w16 whenever possible. Move to 0w20 when the warranty ends and change every 5k.
If the oil change is DIY, leave the filter on at 5k - then change it every 10k.

Congrats on the new Toyota in your near future.

If 0w-8 is the minimum then 10w-30 is the maximum. Again ESP 0w-30 is a good choice but a higher quality euro spec 0w-20 would also be on table. Mobil esp x2 0w-20 is an easy to get option.

They don't UOA engines and they rarely ask for receipts and if they do it's not something they can void the warranty on. Typically they pull the dip stick first to check the level and maybe pull logs for any event where the low oil level warning was on or a no oil pressure code came on but if not they'll pull the valve cover to see if there's sludge, some varnish is fine. And if they ask for receipts say you've simply never keep receipts before and just changed it every 5k because that's how you've done it with all your previous cars and never had a warranty issue. They can't deny warranty if the dip stick was full and there was no low or no oil event stored in the computer and the engine was clean enough when they looked inside.

I guess that makes sense, nothing says we have to keep receipts. I mean it says we can run 0w16 which is what I would most likely run, or even an 0w20 that would end up or be close to an 0w16 anyway, that even a test wouldnt be able to tell the difference.

But that image is NOT what is in the OM for the 2025 Grand Highlander Hybrid. It just shows 0w8 and 0w16 if I cannot find the 0w8. But then as we all know, it literally contradicts itself and says we can use another viscosity if sever use, high speeds etc.

what country is that excerpt above from? What model?

From Australia and I forgot the name of the little suv that uses that engine but it's all about the engine architecture so it doesn't matter much. Toyota makes that 2.5L a25a-fks engine in japan and some get shipped to the US where 0w-16 and now as of 2025 0w-8 is the new minimum because of cafe bean counter rules and some get shipped to Australia where they can use 0w-16 to 15w-40 in those models which is what the grand highlander hybrid uses. But the engines are carbon copies with no more than some outer parts unrelated to the oil that may be changed to accommodate the steering wheel being on the other side. But the internals are identical. The octane is higher only because of the different octane measuring system used outside of the US.

The new dynamic force engines that use 0w-8 can use up to 10w-30. The engine may have 1 cylinder less like the 1.5L m15a but clearances and other relevant specs are the same as the 2.0L m20 the new corolla gets here in the US but the one outside of the US specs 0w-8 to 10w-30 while here it's just 0w-8/16. I didn't post all document to my first post so I'll repost it again with all 3 pages this time. The a25a-fks was never designed for 0w-8 but rather 0w-16. Toyota likely out of epa fine avoidance back specd the a25a-fks run on 0w-8 to eek out a little bit more to appease the strict epa regulations.

Ah yeah, I cant use that chart for here, yea sure its the same engine but seeing as this will be under warranty until the day I get rid of it, the best I can do would be 0w16. Which according to the contradictory manual, is okay for sever service.

What Im going to do most likely is ask the dealer we buy from what they say and recommend. But most likely get it via email for at least SOME kind of proof they told me versus word of mouth.

Warranty schmarranty.

Why even get a car if you are so worried about it spontaneously kablomo the engine into pieces?

My 2025 Toyota Crown Signia hybird 2.5l calls for 0w 8. I did 1st oil change at around 1000 miles and went with Mobil Extended Performance 0W-20 because I use it in another vehicle. Not going out of my way to stock 0w 8 when 0w 20 will be just fine. Around here if your only doing 70 MPH on I5 in many areas a guy practically gets ran over... just saying. So I look at 0w 20 as a plus over 0w 8 in my conditions. So far the 2.5l has not blown up.

60k isnt cheap for a car that isnt worth that. everything is expensive, I dont have money to just throw away, so I like to try and maintain adherence to what we're told to do.

Yeah IMO sever driving is over 65 and well most of our roads are over that, as you said - if not youll get ran off the road.
