WRX Oil Choices

Walnut blasted?
or your preferred method. the subaru TSB for cleaning valve deposits involves spraying a PEA-based cleaner into the intake manifold via a vacuum line or MAP sensor hole, PEA-based fuel additive in the gas tank, followed by an italian tune-up.

I did this last time I had a random misfire code and it's been gone for almost 20k miles now, all for the cost of a can of GDI valve cleaner and a bottle of fuel system cleaner.

Good lort, I was not expecting to spark up some controversy :ROFLMAO:

Looks like the general consensus is clean, full oil, and monitor frequently. Looks like M1 5w30 ESP is the easiest to find here, or order from WM easy. Might order the 3 5qt pack from WM and use it in the WRX and Tacoma with the little 4 cylinder turbo.

Dumb as it sounds, despite the AWD system I won't drive it much in the winter mess we get. It will see most of its miles in the warmer months.

The short time I owned a WRX ( Traded for a first year Hellcat ) I used Idemitsu and that older Japan made OEM Subaru filter but around 2014 / 15 Subaru changed that Japan made filter to Fram made OEM in the USA market, I then started using WIX filters with the same OEM by-pass PSI spec. I'm still a fan of Gastonia NC made WIX!

My buddy used Rotella in his ( seen better days 2002 WRX) not that it was the oils fault as that WRX was a modified dog but my buddy only got 10K miles total from purchase day to selling to the junk guy as he lost an engine. He paid $10K and got 10K miles,,, $1 a mile and the engine went BOOM!

The day he purchased that car I noticed his factory air box K&N was completely deteriorated to what I would call mush! Not the filter area as much as the rubber frame, he had to toss the K&N ( I have used K&N 30 years ) I have never seen a destroyed K&N and I wondered then if the filter is that bad what about that engine?

I have zero problems with my WRX, Cool car!

This is BITOG friend, if someone started a thread entitled, "Is water REALLY wet???" there would be BITOG spelling expurts coming out of the woodwork to argue with every last little trivial nuance.

I call it the sickness of correctness and it has infected much of the internet and society.

this thread is downright cordial tbh. wait til you ask about which filter is ok to use!

It's basically this.

I'm sure the 5W-30 is a fine oil, and it has similar stringent approvals, but many here favor the 0W-30 due to its ester content. Same price. I would use it in both too.

this is the real shame. a subaru on winter tires is like driving a supercar in the winter.

Maybe once I get some new tires. The Hankooks that are on there really don't get good winter reviews. That and all the salt. I guess I could Woolwax the underside when I change the rear diff and transmission oil.

fair, it is terrible working on my car. I should probably do krown or fluid film but the real killer is the jesus bolts on the knuckles. nothing stops corrosion getting in, any suspension job is a nightmare.
