There used to be KevGuy who would step up, but he could never explain WHY except that they were orange.

KevGuy is currently under going therapy due to FRAM using another color on its filters instead of orange. Culture shock, I think.

Before I met her, my wife would buy a car based on nothing but color and the number of doors it had.

KevGuy hasn't been around much, I miss him he cracked me up in spite of his obvious trolling.

KC, how is your filter testing going? Going to cut any open anytime soon?

Oh, Zee, why do you insist upon bringing logic and data into a topic that is clearly predicated on emotion and brand bigotry?

I'm going to have to pull your BITOG "AROFCC" privileges (Anan-Retentive Oil and Filter Changer Card), and ask that you sit quitely in the corner wearing the cloak of shame (facts and figures) unique only to those who place knowledge above rhetoric. You can have a seat next to me.

... think I'll get under the chair instead.

Yeah, it's fun to watch the newbies come in on a regular basis and don't quite understand oil filters or how a positive displacement oiling system works. It takes a lot of time and reading to fully comprehend something that most people think is so simple. And it does become simple once all the knowledge is absorbed ... just like anything else, like brain surgery.

I'd use a FRAM over any of those, at this point, ONLY because I have zero experience with other brands and FRAM has never caused me any issues.

Before anyone gets all huffy, I'm currently waiting to do my next oil/filter change with a PureOne.

Interesting ... "W Fold" media pleats for more filtering area. Hummm ... wonder why nobody does that today?

It doesn't matter who makes the filter as long as their manufacturing process is good. I does matter who designs it and what the design specifications are.

EXACTLY!

All those filter brands were made and designed long before any merge with Fram and Champ Labs. Fram didn't have anything to do with the design of those filters. If this merger results in a drop in mfg'ing quality for those filters chances are those companies will look elsewhere for their builder.

This whole topic and comments like these are just asanine and one helluva a way for the OP to join the forum. Makes you wonder what kind of agenda the OP has?

Nothing like the new guy on the block telling everyone they are clueless. He(she)hasn't had/seen a failure so none of us have. What a crock. "I" personally lost an engine to a POC Fram filter so now you( OP )have heard of a failure.

Just lame.

I would like someone to explain to me why every month we have to have one of these stupid 100 page long threads about Fram. Why do people use them, why do people hate them, wah...wah...wah.

WHO GIVES A FLYING DIRTY WORD....????

I joined BitOG in winter 2002/2003, nearly 5 years before you did, this is my 2nd user ID as I no longer have access to the registered email to my original ID. So you are actually the "newbie" from my perspective, buster!

And I didn't call anyone "clueless" - I merely asked why so many folks on online forums hate Fram, because I have never heard of a failure of one personally, and have been a an auto technician and an engineer for over 30 years, but I guess when you sell millions of oil filters every year, more than all of the other firms combined, at least someone is gonna have one fail, and it sounds like one of those folks was you - and apparently couldn't have happened to a nicer guy!

Not too intelligent to judge someone that you really no nothing of their background, your intellect may be a small subset of the fellow's you are currently berating at the moment. - Chill out man, life is too short, I didn't wreck your engine, I am just trying to catch up on when Fram became a bad word, it was thought of as the best for a long time. And looking at their sales even today, without even being the low priced ho of the market, apparently a lot of folks still like their filters besides me.

I've used Fram for years and have never had a problem. My pal at work had his oil changed about a month ago, and noticed his engine was making strange noises. After he let a mechanic look at the problem, the Fram filter had come apart and plugged up the oil pump. They are sending it to fram for repair costs. Now I'm not bashing Fram for this, as it could happen to any filter. Having said that, I don't think he'll ever use this brand again.

Has anyone noted the new FRAMs? They now have mileage warranties right on the box.....If I recall, orange can is stated for 6k, silver can (TG) for 8k......Ultra (gold) for 10k.....the numbers could be wrong.....but I found that surprising, that they are actually marketing their filters for extended use now.......but really, it's about time......since most manufacturers are spec'ing longer OCIs in a whole......[censored], my mom's Hyundai Accent (no idea what year......she just got it dealer pre-owned.....must be a 2010 or so....) and I read her owner's manual with her and was surprised to see a lowly budget hyundai spec'ing a 7.5k OCI, with "QUAKER STATE" 5w20......lol, that was a shocker.....now I know Ford recs MotorCraft obviously....but even my 08 Kia Optima didn't have a brand recommendation
wink.gif

Google "Minimopar Oil Filter Study" Fram can make a good filter, their high end products demonstrate that, but there are other companies making good filters for less money, and Fram low end filters are best avoided.

When people who hang out on BITOG (or similar chat board) started cutting filters open, discussing and comparing to others out there ...that's when FRAM started showing it's true colors. Keep in mind that this action has actually helped the Ultra out, as it's viewed as a very nice filter by many.

People who do cut them open and hang out on a board like this are probably less than 1/100th of one percent of people who use oil filters. The other portion of the filter user population go by brand advertising, family loyalty ("my dad always used FRAM, so I should too") or just by how nice it looks on the outside. "Can't judge a filter by the can" instead of "can't judge a book by the cover".

No, I was thinking that this jfking guy was the reincarnation of KevGuy the way he's being so defensive of the Fram filters. Sorry if it came off as being directed at you.

The Ultra is a good filter, and the price is reasonable. Its probably the only Fram I would use. I was talking about the Orange Can specifically. Unfortunately its internal looks turn people off.
