Because when you want your car to do everything but brush your teeth, a dedicated knob does only one thing. And if the complicated cars of today had dedicated knobs for everything, there would be no room for the driver.
 
Why do car manufacturers want the center dash similar to an iPhone ???

Very gimmicky and difficult to use. No knobs ?

Funny thing you mention this. GM actually gives each customer a free iPad with the car to help them learn CUE.

You probably just need to drive one for awhile and then you'll probably like it just as you did the Cruze

I do get what your saying about complicated touch screen menus instead of knobs and buttons. I think after you used it for a while you get a lot faster and more intuitive. I still prefer simpler mechanical controls.
 
Just like the Sync in many Ford vehicles, I don't need an entertainment center.

The Cruze was a great car, better than the 2012 Honda Accord I rented.

Well there is something we agree on. I don't need all the gizmos. I like the basics, PW/PD/Cruise and AC. Everthing else take away from driving.

I think there are designs that give you both. Its really making non-entertainment options part of the soft screen that bothers me. I LIKE the voice-activated hands-free link to my phone. I like the touchscreen nav. I don't mind the touch-screen radio tuning and I like the steering-wheel volume and track skip/station scan buttons. What chapped me was the HVAC controls on the rental Ford I had. That's just absurd.
 
Just to note, CUE still has a number of physical (capacitive touch) buttons permanently located on the center stack for controlling HVAC operation.

Just about the only thing that must be done through a menu on the display is airflow control. Temperature, blower speed, recirc, front defog, and rear defrost all have a button on the enter stack. Of course, you also could just leave it in auto and let the system do it's thing.

It's not simple three-knob HVAC, but it doesn't send you though a maze of screen menus for most of the common operations either.

It's true.

For buyers who are not used to touch screens, I think plying around with an iPad provides a smoother (or less shocking) transition to CUE. Or at least that may have been GM's thinking. It's basically like learning your way around a new computer with a new operating system, like Windows 8.

The concept behind CUE is also to program a lot of settings/favorites etc. in advance (while you're in your driveway), so that you don't have to mess with it while driving. There are also steering wheel controls that allow you to perform many of the most common functions so that you can keep your hands on the wheel.

Like I mentioned earlier, no personal experience, but I think it's just a matter of getting used to something new. And because the software is upgradeable, most of the bugs will get worked out. I'm just wondering whether a touch screen will last as long as a knob or a button before it fails.

We use a bunch of them in the Navy and they get hammered on. They seem to last a good long time.
 
Nice Caddy! The March 2012 issue of Car & Driver had an article on some of the engineering that went into the ATS...this ain't no Cimarron. It's a true longitudinal engine, RWD, clean sheet design. Way to go GM/Cadillac. It looks like they actually put some thought into this one.

I hope Lincoln will do something as "daring," but I doubt it. The LS was their last attempt at a real RWD smallish midsize sedan, and since that didn't go too well they will keep rebadging Fusions, Edges, and Expeditions until being dissolved.

I'm not liking the iDashes one bit either. These will be just as bad as the huge floor mounted car phones when they are broken 10 years from now, the difference is that this time you won't be able to control your HVAC or radio. I really don't get the iLife touchscreen obsession. People will completely toss reliability aside though for something shiny and captivating, then complain when it breaks and demand something stupider. Not a specific knock on the OP's car, the [censored] screens are now prevalent in just about every brand.

But they're wrong. They imply that the first generation XB was any more "spritely" than the current "bloated" version. :-p

I know about it..the only place in the world the pigment was made, which was Germany, had a big fire and we lost several paint colors due to it. My plant (Arlington, Texas large SUV's) lost 4 colors but they are slowly returning.
 
What does it compete with? To put it differently, what price category it is being aimed at? What can I buy at similar prices? Can I get a 275-300 hp car in that price bracket?
