This morning, the local TV news had a segment on the "new" (to US) Golf Sportwagen.
While not a GTI, if you want the VW experience and a bit more cargo room, that might be the ticket.
Not sure it's for me, since I still recall my 81 VW Rabbit Diesel. But it's an option for some.

The Golf/GTI has a very large rear cargo opening and when you fold down the rear seats you have almost 53 cubic feet of storage space available that can easily fit very large items on your trip from Home Depot, etc. Neither Mustang, Camaro, Challenger, or even the Accord can do that. It has almost as much cargo room as my wife's Q5.
