Gang,

I was perusing C/L the other day (yeah, I know scammer city much of the time) when I saw a Made in Mexico (MiM) Stratocaster for sale that appeared to be in great shape. The seller was asking nearly as much as I could buy a new one ($400), but I contacted them and made arrangements to see it. The seller stated that it had been played less than 50 times and was in mint condition; the photos seemed to substantiate the claims.

It was a 2006 (Fender's 60th Anniversary) model and true to the seller's word, it was in mint condition. In fact, the shrinkwrap was still on a few parts. There was not a scratch on it and it looked new--in appeared as though it had not been played at all. It had a soft case, all the original papers, extra strings, and the like. The seller paid $700 for it from Guitar Center back in 2006 (she overpaid nearly double what she should have) and she told me her mother was going to kill her for selling it for less than $300. I told her that was unfortunate, but the market would only bear what it would (these sell in the $250-$275 range all day in Houston). I picked it up for $275 and it is a beautiful blue (no longer made), sounds great, and my wife loves it. We now have 3 Fenders in the family and we are all learning to play along with my other son who is learning how to play the drums (my wife also plays violin and the piano).

Here are some photos (the glare from the lights makes it appear to have white scratches here and there, but there are zero scratches on it):

Beautiful strat!! I go to the NAMM show every year, my family owns one of the largest instrument case manufacturers in the world. The Fender display is awesome. I really need to pick up a guitar and learn how to play. I drool over the Ibanez JS1000BPs every year, just can't pull the trigger on one.

I'm mostly a bass player, but Strats are my favorite guit*rs. I have a Squier that I got off Craigslist for $20(!), and also a Mexican Strat that the previous owner put some nice Seymour Duncan pickups into.

That one you just picked up looks sharp.

Telecasters are cool, but I just prefer the curves of a Stratocaster over a Tele. I am a bit of a writer in my spare time and wrote a poem about my Strat (not sure if OK to post here though).

My friend swears by Stratocasters...but only Strats made before 1975, played through an ancient tube amp. And he wouldn't use a Fender bass if you gave it to him.

So...are ALL guitarists weird, or just him?

A lot are a little out there. A really good friend of mine has a bunch of guitars. He keeps them in a room with about $250,000 worth of quartz crystals on the walls. He has inflatable aliens and weird stuff all over the room. Of course he also has a couple triple bay tool boxes in his garage with a sweet 428CJ Mach 1 to balance out the weirdness.

Very nice! Love the color! I've got a Fender Squire Stratocaster (1986 model, white with a rosewood neck) and I've also got an Ibanez SA series in Sunburst Orange.

Had to mention this...dumb thing seen on the swapper at a hobby shop: "FOR SALE--guitar and amp--2006 Peavey amp and 1998 Fender Startocaster guitar with hard case."

*FACEPALM*

Seems like you got quite a deal. I thought those sold for no less than $500 new and $375-400 used in good condition. Who sales them new for $400?
