Gang,
I was perusing C/L the other day (yeah, I know scammer city much of the time) when I saw a Made in Mexico (MiM) Stratocaster for sale that appeared to be in great shape. The seller was asking nearly as much as I could buy a new one ($400), but I contacted them and made arrangements to see it. The seller stated that it had been played less than 50 times and was in mint condition; the photos seemed to substantiate the claims.
It was a 2006 (Fender's 60th Anniversary) model and true to the seller's word, it was in mint condition. In fact, the shrinkwrap was still on a few parts. There was not a scratch on it and it looked new--in appeared as though it had not been played at all. It had a soft case, all the original papers, extra strings, and the like. The seller paid $700 for it from Guitar Center back in 2006 (she overpaid nearly double what she should have) and she told me her mother was going to kill her for selling it for less than $300. I told her that was unfortunate, but the market would only bear what it would (these sell in the $250-$275 range all day in Houston). I picked it up for $275 and it is a beautiful blue (no longer made), sounds great, and my wife loves it. We now have 3 Fenders in the family and we are all learning to play along with my other son who is learning how to play the drums (my wife also plays violin and the piano).
Here are some photos (the glare from the lights makes it appear to have white scratches here and there, but there are zero scratches on it):
