People are driving like maniacs!

It is not the speed that kills, it is a combination of factors including people that can't handle speed safely as well as factors beyond their control like weather that kills.

Speed in and of itself does not kill.
But that's the problem; MOST average people simply cannot handle 90mph safely. Speed comes too easily without work or understanding of physics. Folks just push on a accelerator and steer the wheel and away they go. It's all fine, UNTIL there's an emergency.

As I wrote above, it takes 2-3 football fields to stop at that speed, in ideal situations. So, then the speed does, in fact, kill. Because physics doesn't take a rest, and when that speeding car hits a stationary object (another car, road debris, deer, etc.) humans get smashed very hard.

Remove the higher speeds variable and you have more reaction time and can stop or maneuver in shorter distances. Look at that NFL player who hit that woman at high speeds. Cut the speeds by 80% and she probably lives.

This is a no-brainer.

Following that reasoning, just stay home and don’t drive, slowest speed available! Perfectly safe!

One area of technology I will embrace is drones monitoring all areas of highways and issuing reckless driving tickets for offenders going too fast or erratic. If I were king for a day, the first eggregious speeding offense is 6 months revocation. The second offense 5 years. The 3rd, permanent revocation of drivers license.

"Reckless" is both objective and/or subjective. But it would include anything on the highways 20% over the speed limit in ideal conditions, or in school zones, etc. Tailgating, erratic lane changes, not signaling lane changes in traffic, etc. And if you cause and accident you lose your license for a year, minimum. No appeal. Get used to walking. If you cause and accident with serious injuries or death, good bye driving privileges forever.

I pick a big vehicle in the right lane, usually an 18 wheeler, get 5-7 car lengths back, and just cruise there.

You save gas by being sucked along, cops usually get the truck, not you, and they are usually doing the speed limit or close to it…

Get out of the left lane!!! I don't care if you are "doing the limit". ;)
So, let me understand. I have to stay home and not drive so folks like you, a self confessed speeder and tailgater, can rule the roads with illegal behavior operating with impunity? Um, no, that's not how this works. You should lose your license so sane people can safely drive on the highways.

That's drafting, which I think is illegal and dangerous b/c you have to be much closer than 7 car lengths. You have to be something like 1 or 2 car lengths to be in the pocket. That means no reaction time. The pennies you save in MPGs, will be lost the first time you hit something in the road the semi passes over or a blown tire the truck throws.

Nope, that is actually how it works. Drive your speed you are comfortable at, but don’t let your entitledness dictate what speed I should be doing.

If I can safely cruise at 240 km/hr on the German autobahns all day, everyday, I should be able to cruise at 80 mph in the US.

If you think slower is better in all cases, maybe you should stay home.

You're on the other side of this.. Many of us can handle the speed.. preaching to me about how many football fields it takes to stop etc.. My friend, I have ZR 102W rated tires on my car, i know how to drive high speed safely.. it may be a no-brainer to you, but, you're still wrong.

I'll agree that many people can't drive safely, if you want to persist.

My company makes systems that intervene to slow a car down if it senses the driver cant handle it. Many factors go into it. You want to drive slow, you can.

LOL. Um, my entitledness? You're making my point for me. You might want a driving refresher. It's a privilege and you have to obey speed limits. Not my opinion.

I have a lot of the same sentiments as you.. I am trying to remain polite.

A few years ago, Georgia passed a law requiring slower traffic to keep to the right (I always thought that was already the law). As a result, the slow lane is the least used lane and slow drivers are everywhere else. Politicians pass laws and think that will solve the problem, but without enforcement it is a waste of time. Driver's are like children-they like to see what they can get away with and if they don't get their hands slapped it just encourages them to try more.
Amazingly, it is drivers from that area (Georgia) and places around it that act like you are saying something wrong if you suggest to them that the rules of the road, as well as common sense, say the right lane is for slow driving and the left lane(s) are for passing.

I may be guilty of appearing to pick on The South but, proper lane usage is lacking. I've developed the skill of passing on the right.. because, you are not going to impede my travel when I'm going where I'm going.

This is where this stuff comes from.

And, no, it is not just The South but it does appear to be commonplace and widespread amongst certain areas, normally people just speed in the left lane and cut over because they really speed, that's not going slow in the left lane .

Cute.

I'm an expert driver and have actually taken highly specialized drivers courses. I also have a performance car with 105Y rated performance tires. Being a expert driver means that I understand physics and stopping distances. I might engage in brief spirited driving, under extremely safe conditions (long visibility, no cars near me, warm dry conditions, etc.) but not the recklessness I see daily on the roads such as high speeds with short visibility, cold roads, tailgating, and erratic lane changes, etc.

You're obviously not understanding. If I'm going 70 (the speed limit) in a 4wd SUV driving on freezing winter conditions, with snow and damp roads, and lifted trucks and RWD cars are flying past me in a convoy of vehicles going 80, 90, 100+ mph that is absolutely a danger to themselves and to me. They cannot stop in any reasonable distances, and if they suffer an emergency they put everyone in front of them or beside them or immediately behind them at risk...

I highly doubt you are what you say, but, yeah, you've just exposed yourself, nobody is going "80, 90, 100+ in winter conditions." I had to speed triple digits in a light rain on my 102Ws. Sue me. I'll race you.. but, these are distractions.

You do not appear to be a serious poster and I will stop there.

At this point I think you're trying to get a reaction out of us.

Merry Christmas, and the U.S. uses fractions and MPH. Please tell us how this makes us Neanderthals, lol.

I'm about done with you..

Uh, that speeding fine info is actually in a 110 km/hr zone. I drive by it often.

With my cruise set to 140 km/hr. If I get ticketed, fine. That’s my choice.
I wasn't making a statement about the speed, I was simply refuting your absurd position that traffic laws are my OPINION. They are the law.

If you're driving 140 in a 110, that's over 20% over the limit. I hope someone driving 20% over the limit would lose her/his license for at least a short term.

I could have guessed you aren't from the U.S.

Well, you'd be incorrect in addition to a bad unsafe driver and the subject of the anger most of us feel toward bad unsafe drivers. I just experienced this, in winter conditions, as I've explained. Try to follow along, rather than repeatedly embarrass yourself with wrong guesses in addition to bad unsafe driving confessions.

Probably they mail you tickets based on your income for what is deemed the societal good..

First poster I had to put on ignore.

He's taking you all for a ride and I'm not getting in trouble for it. See it for what it is.

I am correct, you are incorrect.

Write your congressman for changes to the law.

You're just baiting us now and I'm done taking it.

Goodbye.
