People are driving like maniacs!

In practical terms, speed limits do not exist on many roads. LEOs do not generally stop you unless you are doing something truly reckless that offends their sensibilities. The primary limiter of speed is traffic. The second is when a mass of folks reach the maximum speed they are comfortable driving at. Otherwise, drive as fast as you want to without being reckless.

It wasn't long ago when the speed limit was 65mph.

70mph in December in Illinois is now considered "putting along?!" Good grief. What would you have this person do? Go faster than she's comfortable with and probably beyond the speed limit? Weave in and out of semi trucks putting her and everyone in danger of an accident? Just so you're not momentarily inconvenienced? Where are you going in life that the extra few minutes this cost you makes any real world difference?

Let's assume you wanted to go 80mph. She held you back at 70mph for an extra 10 minutes.
How far can you get in 10 minutes with that extra unimpeded 10mph. About 6 miles. Which is a whopping 5 minutes ...

I guess it's better if folks die in speeding accidents so others aren't inconvenienced by following the speed laws? In December?!

Here's a picture I took driving up I-65 from Indianapolis to Chicago. I got a pack of cars ahead of me that is stuck behind one Toyota Sienna minivan that simply will not get out of the left lane and there's a whole long string of cars behind me as well. If as you say someone doesn't feel comfortable driving freeway speeds then they need to stay off the freeway or at the very least get out of other people's way when they're driving faster than you and you're in a passing Lane driving slower than everyone else.

I won't argue with that, we've all been stuck behind the left-lane cruiser and that is rude and dangerous b/c impatient folks will take aggressive measures to get around them. My high school classmate's dad passed on the right shoulder and caused and accident that killed someone and he went to prison. Is that a good solution?

I agree the person cruising in the left lane and holding up traffic should be cited. That behavior is annoying and illegal.

If we all just followed the RULES of the road, the correct lane, the correct safe speed, followed smart merging behavior, passed on the left and then moved to the right, and were courteous to others, the roads would operate very efficiently and safely.

I despise left-lane cruisers. I despise those driving recklessly and inconsiderately. In both lanes.

Well down here a good thing came up out of a very bad thing. There was a bad accident that involved 4-5 vehicles and many major injuries on a highway with a POSTED 55 mph speed limit. Of course it took 2 to 3 years of legal granstanding. All sorts of appeals & postponement requests for all type of special considerations for the person who was clearly the cause "on clear video evidence films from victims autos." Finally a Judge stepped forward and issued a trial date. The driver who caused all of this carnage and pain and suffering by the vicitms and their families was going to be forced to face her victims in public in a trial. They threw the book at her for causing all of the damages and injuries and they judge even felt he needed to make a statement to her about what she has caused to innocent human beings just trying to travel in peace and safety. The results were that this unappologetic girl who was a juvenile at the time she caused all of the mess will have to pay several thousands (don't know where the money will come from) and was sentenced to serve 12 months in a juvenile detention center, loss of driving privileges for 24 months and a long 5 years of probation and community services. Many felt she deserved much more due to her callous disregard for others safety and she showed zero sign of sorrow and would not even admit it was her young , impatient , selfishly , wild driving attitude that led to her causing the accident by weaving in and out of traffic at high speed to suddenly slamming on brakes to cross two lanes of traffic to attempt a turn cause she claimed in her defense (OMG) that she was late to pick up her daughter!? So... I guess justice was served. Juvenile + mother of a child already. No husband or signifigant other to help with child... Caused major wreck in a borrowed car with minimal insurance + caused major injuries and suffering to people and destroyed all the vehicles simply because she was LATE to be someplace! She still would not admit she caused the accident and did not appologize to anyone! Who raises these kind of so called "young adults!"
Casey Anthony ?

Man, some people just make you mad.

The maximum sentences will do nothing for that girl (the one you posted about.) After the 5 years are up, when this person is allowed a license again. Or maybe they just won't get one. Got news for ya, people drive without them..... that's just sad, the story you relayed.

I am thankful every day that I have above-average intelligence, 9 out of 10 I'd say, since I don't want to be a true genius although I can usually figure it out, point is I am gifted.. Above-average driving skill, and learn more every day, as I may in fact be selected to drive prototype vehicles on a test track. Even if someone with seniority gets that, (our company test drives every vehicle before delivery. Few do that but whatever, that's on them) the point is, I am thankful and you have to know your machine, (in this case, your car. Same with your Komatsu and whatever else it is) and what it can do, what it can't, I have many, many, many hours of practice with good habits developed and bad habits addressed and when you look at the Autobahn and the disciplines they use at speed, all you can do is marvel in wonder at how fortunate and blessed you are and how to Pay That Forward in how you drive on a public road. There are some things you do, some things you don't, and some you do while it is safe. Better believe State Police have this training too, at least the pursuit trained ones, it is a mind blower to know that not every Statie is a Nascar driver.

Unrelated: A couple of months ago, one was flipped at 85MPH testing Driver Alerts and they failed, and the vehicle rolled and flipped at 85MPH.. Everyone was fine but wow.. point is, they do that so what gets delivered to you is held to the utmost safety standards, for you and your family and loved ones riding in.

Please, drive with some common sense. Too many, do not. Thank you.

75-80 is considered "putting along"... I see who you were responding to..

Self control.. Self control..

My Honda RC45 will do 90mph in 1st gear and when I hit 6th its going straight to jail velocity... you have to think faster than the bike to stay safe...

Isle Of Man street race clip demonstrates total concentration at a 180+mph on the perverted highway...

I was on I-75 here in Florida and driving at 85 mph in a pack of around 10 cars.

It felt like a NASCAR race and it only takes a person to make a mistake and a big wreck will happen.

Remember what that area was like when 95 dead ended half way down! That was a hell on earth when it got busy. North of Miami. Even today it’s a crap show. Every time I’m in fla I drive by at lest 1 motorcycle accident with them laying in the ditch all twisted up. I cringe when I see a semi flying 85 - 90 surrounded by a pack of cars. I’ve watched those things go for the long slide and believe me it’s more like an airliner than a corvette.

I can take the same picture on highway 175 headed for East Texas. It's an epidemic.

Remember how all good zombie films start, miles of traffic jams...last month in Oz, I can understand exactly why.

Not quite the same as in "the stand"...

The other day I followed a person going 10 to 15 under the speed limit........and then briefly slow down coming up to a stop sign.......and go right through it like it wasn't there.

So does keeping at the speed limit constitute as slow traffic?
Yes.

There is more than one traffic law.

Keep right except to pass is just as important.

Don’t do the speed limit and then stay in the left lane, that is illegal, too.

I'm sure the many fewer people would die in auto accidents if the speed limit were say 25 mph?
Wouldn't it be worth it to save even one life ? If not hundreds Every year?

Or is there a trade off of safety to practicality?

Where do you draw the line where one speed is safe, and 10 mph more is utter lunacy?

IIRC. Hoover era roads were designed for 70 mph back then. Certainly modern cars, brakes, safety equipment are better than 70 years ago?

It would depend where you are driving I suppose?

Speed limits go down to about 15 mph in some ares here, where there's a high probability of children playing for example. A lot of cities have 18 mph limits (30 kph actually) throughout, as does Brussels except for ringways and main entrance ways where it's 31 mph (50 kph).

They are REALLY putting the hammer down on speeding too, 1 kph over* will result in a fine and consecutive offences will increase in severity. Non-payment means an automatic ban from driving, 30 kph over can also mean loss of license.

Average speeds are monitored over longer distances aswell as the usual spot checks.

They want to go to 0 traffic deaths by 2050 officially but everyone knows it's a speed tax. Private firms that monitor the average speed cams are advocating to remove the speed bumps to catch more people speeding.

* you get 6 kph or 6% (whichever is higher) tolerance to account for equipment inaccuracy, so do 37 (corrected to 31) and you get fined 60-ish euro if you pay withing 5 days or 80 ish if you wait longer. You don't want to go to court, the minimum fines are much higher there and you won't win. + there's court costs.

How many people were killed and injured in traffic 70 years ago vs now? That should answer your question about saftey. it's not all about the cars

People are not fully awake yet, but I've already been tailgated once (in the township) and had strong passive-aggressive vibes at lights where people were contemplating challenging me to get to a merge first, the whole let off the brakes just before you think it will turn green.

I would think most road rage happens in the morning commute to work, when people need their most readily available drug.. Coffee.

Merry day after Christmas, I am still mostly avoiding this thread because I have seen both some nonsense and bait in it, the wisdom to know the difference I hope we all have, and also some Ivory Tower individuals that more than likely do not live in the real world. I will not be succeptible to these things in 2022 and things appear to be going fine.

Nights are worst for me, traffic rules go out the window (no indicating before turning, making illegal u-turns, speeding and not yielding). Late evening are second worst, people want to get home and will do what it takes to get ahead.

If she finds herself being tailgated often enough to mention it on a bumper sticker, perhaps she needs to modify her driving habits.
Reminds me of a vehicle I see on my daily commute obstructing traffic going under the speed limit. The vanity plate references the owner's faith. The positive of this is I can spot the plate from a distance away and plan accordingly.

I wish that was true here in California. I often travel across stretches of the desert that are 2 lane State highways with a 55 MPH speed limit. Usually traffic is very light. It is difficult to keep my speed under 65-70 under those conditions. But after getting a $425 ticket from a CHP officer who was set up in a hidden spot and using his radar and clocked me at 71 MPH, I learned to set my cruise control at about 58 MPH and avoid another costly lesson.
