Are people driving faster everywhere, or is it just Michigan?

Victorville to Vegas in less than two hours, baby!

Don't tell me you used to reside in Victorville? Then again you may not want to tell.

People actually live in Victorville?

There is a very large Federal "housing project" there. That's why I inquired.

Oh gosh, when conditions allow highway speeds during commute times are 80 easily. 10mph over isn't nearly the average speed when it's possible.

Just remember that that road that has a limit of 55mph ten years ago is now 40mph and it's hasn't changed. The primary reason behind the speed limits isn't safety.

God, no.

I'm an NC boy. I was in "Victimville" for work. A lot of interesting stuff goes on in the nearby desert.

There is a reason for traffic laws and most think it doesn't apply to them.

What gets me is the hypocrisy of drivers. There has been many threads in this site lately about speeders, tailgaters, and just plain idiot drivers in general. It's evident by what people are posting in these threads that almost everyone speeds, and that speeding is these days considered the norm and is totally acceptable. These people want other drivers to obey the "move right except to pass" laws, but speeding and tailgating are acceptable to them. These people pick and choose which laws should be followed to suit themselves. Look at all of the states that recently have enacted these anti-left lane camper laws. Even law makers consider speeding the norm as this law is aimed at allowing speeders to speed. People only follow the driving laws that are convenient for them...

I accept that when I drive 56 in a 55 I will get some angry followers. I am already speeding and I will not be an accomplice in your crime of going faster. If you want to pass you can do so in a legal passing zone. If you can't make the pass in time then it's your fault for not buying a faster car.

Poor planning leads to [censored] poor decisions.

You do know you are going to get doused by the speeding/tailgating crowd, right? According to speeders, drivers who abide by all of the laws are in the wrong...

Trooper said. I see the NY plates I will give you a warning in Washington we do the speed limit...

Yesterday I went to the dump in the truck, I had the cruise set at 65 in 60. I got passed by everyone. Took a road trip last weekend speed limit was 70. Most everyone was going 80 to 85.

I think we are getting faster year after year.

Driving 5 over the limit used to be the norm...now it seems like people are doing 10-20 over, so speeds are definitely on the increase...

I don't understand why there isn't more enforcement of speed limits. Police departments are always complaining about having insufficient budgets...wouldn't writing more tickets cure that problem? They could just sit and hand out tickets to speeders and collect mega bucks, since everyone speeds these days...which would eventually slow down traffic...

At 10MPH over the limit by me, you will be in the right lane while the majority of traffic passes you by. The LEO's are looking for at least 20, if not 25 over before they even think about lighting a car up for a speeding/reckless charge. To be fair, the speed limits on the highways max out at 55MPH by me. Many local roads are 25 or 30MPH limits.

My lord people must have forgotten what driving was like on the hwy prior to the Carter era 55-mph limit. When by myself I routinely hit 90-95 through parts of GA/Alabama, but only when traffic is light and I can see for at least a mile ahead.

People do drive faster today, but of course the problem isn't speeding per se but illegal lane changes/passing and failure to adhere to "left lane for passing". It almost all cases the speeder who's weaving through traffic is doing so because there are vehicles which are traveling too slow in the left lane and/or fail to move over because they want to "teach the speeder a lesson about civility" which is itself ironic.

True. The fast and furious wannabes are the real danger on the roads today.

In our area the left lane is pay to play so the passing lane shifts theoretically. In some places the two left lanes are pay to play.

Speeding alone isn't a problem. Problem is, people speed, but they don't pay attention to their driving. They're too busy texting, playing with one of the many electronic devices found in almost every vehicle these days, doing their make-up, yelling at kids in the back seat, etc,...combine all of this with driving 20 MPH over the limit and you have a 4000 lb pound projectile...

Agree 100%.

If everyone is paying attention and going with the flow of traffic, while being courteous to other drivers, there is NO issue with good weather conditions.

The problem is people texting, not paying attention, intentionally driving like morons, etc.

YES.. I don't understand why there isn't more officers out. On the bike I see so many violations just one day could fund the county/city for a week. Speeding, running lights/stop signs, equipment malfunctions.. the list is long. Not saying I'm perfect by any means by my faults are nothing compared to what I see. Just this weekend went to go eat with the family in Festiva and this ding dong was literally inches from my bumper.. that set me off.. absolutely no reason for it. Put some people behind the wheel they turn into thugs.

If everyone is driving above the speed limit, the speed limit is set too low.

Many years of research have shown that the safest drivers are around the 85th percentile by speed. If that speed is above the limit, then the government is intentionally criminalizing the safest drivers, which is simply insane.

It's because speed is something measurable to police departments, so they can have proof. I did an internship at a police department, and almost every single driver who was pulled over for texting would fight it saying there wasn't any proof.

They could fully fund everything just by handing out tickets to people driving after dark with no lights on...

After things opened up a bit this morning, I was "cruising" around 82 or so - still being passed in one or two of the other lanes. 80 seems pretty smooth in my car.

BTW, I have no idea what the "speed limit" is on that part of the highway.

Here with trucks speed limited to 65mph, I think they actually moderate the average speed on the highway. I like to go just a bit faster than the trucks in the Focus, and its pretty easy relaxed driving. There are still people going 75mph+ but when I'm over in right lane its not a bother.
I pretty much rolled a car on a track day coming off the track at only 60ish mph and that was fast enough. Going off at 80+ your odd of a serious injury or worse gets pretty high.
