Are people driving faster everywhere, or is it just Michigan?

What about single lane roads? Or when two people driving the limit are abreast on a two lane road? The main offender is doing the speed limit in the left lane of the highway, but those are pretty rare.

It's unsafe to not go with the flow of traffic, other drivers are going to have to make necessary moves to get around you which will expose them to more risk than you increasing your speed by 20%.

It's good to know it's not just here at least - it's been so long I forgot about New Jersey!
I guess I should clarify the main stretches of highway I take are I-94 between Port Huron and downtown Detroit or occasionally shot out to Hamtramck (I don't have any real reason to go downriver much), M-53 up into the thumb, and to a lesser extent I-75 to Bay City or the up to the bridge and into the UP. Driving is what I do to relax, so I do it a lot - like 14-20k miles a year with a job that's 15 miles away. On 94, if traffic allows, one can do 75-80mph all the way down to at least the Conner Ave exit and many frequently do. I used to take I-696 between 94 and 75 until the construction.

As far as people routinely doing 90mph+, I most frequently see it on I-94 between 23 mile and I-696, and on eastbound 696 after I-75. These are stretches of highway where you're not as likely to encounter a cop.

When I moved to Washington state in 1995 I had a 1988 Dodge Daytona Shelby (loved that car) I got pulled over for going 62 in 55 which coming from New York seemed SLOW.
Trooper said. I see the NY plates I will give you a warning in Washington we do the speed limit...

Yesterday I went to the dump in the truck, I had the cruise set at 65 in 60. I got passed by everyone. Took a road trip last weekend speed limit was 70. Most everyone was going 80 to 85.

I think we are getting faster year after year.

Here in Illinois, at least in my area, the left lane is doing 80 in the morning - regardless of the speed limit. (it was 55, now its 65; no difference in actual speed)
in the afternoon the speed is much slower (generally within 5 of the posted limit; alot more semi traffic) and all 3-5 lanes are going the same speed. very difficult to change lanes.

I can vouch for that!

It's been several years since I drove through CP and all I remember is, if you weren't going at least 85+, you were just in the way. It didn't matter if it was clear and sunny, rainy, or snowing. Thankfully, when it snowed too bad, the CHP would escort all the cars through the pass.

Here in the Northeast, everyone drives over the speed limit. Try driving the limit and you'll have angry people zipping by you in all directions.

They definitely aren't driving any faster in Texas, I took a road trip last summer through Texas up to Oklahoma, Texas has by far the SLOWEST drivers on the road, I couldn't believe it!

It's everywhere. Cars too fast and people think it's a video game or movie. They haven't got a clue how dangerous it all is. Should be mandatory driver training every license renewal.

I agree. People here are just driving dangerously all the time. In a 17 minute drive, I often encounter 4-5 critical situations where an accident could easily occur. Speeding here is a problem, but just plain bad and inattentive driving is much more of a problem. One morning I counted 11 of fifteen cars on their cell phones going to work. Women seem to be the worst offenders. I would rather see someone driving a bit fast and fully attentive than someone within the speed limit using a smart phone.

People are so disconnected from their driving anymore. Getting a drivers license should be much harder, and continuing education should be mandatory.

Why is everyone acting like speed is the problem? We should be glad that we can get places faster, but we should be pushing for all other aspects of driving to be better enforced.

A pack of cars doing 120 on the interstate isn't a problem until one of the cars drifts out of their lane because of texting or fails to signal they are about to merge off using the exit lane (and causes a cascading brake effect).

On 2 lane roads if I choose to drive the speed limit,(retired and not going to work, etc), then that is my right! However, I do watch what is behind me and if I am causing a problem for speeders, I will pull off the road from time to time and let them break the law. If I am in an area where "pulling off" is not possible, I will speed up somewhat.

It's just a reflection of the selfies culture.
People think they are so special and have no patience or respect for others.everyone is in a hurry to get somewhere.
There is a reason for traffic laws and most think it doesn't apply to them.

IMO, the problem is not the speed, it's the speed differential.

Those who are constantly "late" and those who are responsible leaving on time cause a huge drift in the commute.

I accept that when I drive 56 in a 55 I will get some angry followers. I am already speeding and I will not be an accomplice in your crime of going faster. If you want to pass you can do so in a legal passing zone. If you can't make the pass in time then it's your fault for not buying a faster car.

Poor planning leads to [censored] poor decisions.

Watching everone trying to go 120 MPH on the interstate would be great entertainment ... from a helicopter !!

Here it's either you 2 feet from the cars bumper infront of you or will get cutoff by a driver watching a movie or texting on their phone. Also if a car has its blinker on this means they have the right to merge they are not responsible to ensure there is a vehicle in the lane or not. This includes semi's with a load. This is at least the prevailing mentally here. Always Arizoans blame this on non native Arizona drivers.

Don't tell me you used to reside in Victorville? Then again you may not want to tell.
