Owner denied warranty for being outside OCI by 600 miles and short tripping.

Quite a story. But hey, its on Reddit, a known hotbox of truth, reason, and good tidings. From an account thats exactly two days old, with no other posts, setting the CX50 subreddit and at least one thread on BITOG in meltdown. I'm sure its 100% true, barring any further evidence, which some of you dont seem to require. Some of you might want to stop buying vehicles at all if your pre-purchase research and decision to not buy from this or any other manufacturer consists of an anecdote of one... from Reddit. You guys crack me up.

As much as this pains me to say it, THIS is the use case for EVs. Very short commute, especially when combined with an absolute BS excuse from Mazda.

Time to dig thru the vehicle & find the GPS unit (my G8’s Continental unit was secured under the rear package tray) and disconnect it. Nearly every car has Android Auto/Apple CarPlay so there’s no need for the vehicle itself to know where you’re going.

How long before that GPS data gets forwarded to your insurer, and just because you move with the actual flow of traffic, your insurer dumps you because your average speed on the highway is 20.01mph faster than the posted speed limits along the routes you frequent?? Which by your state laws is reckless driving and results in suspension of your license? IIOT is not your friend!

Burner accounts are common when posting stuff like that on Reddit. You don't wanna link it to your main account.

The thing here is....he didn't follow the book, so as a manufacturer, where do you draw the line? I can see splitting the cost but again, we told you do do X, and you did Y and still want us to cover it.
I would hope Mazda would be reasonable about it. Would 10 out of 10 SAE engineers agree that the motor was not going to be saved by 600 miles less on each OCI? I would think so.
I wouldn't think this usage profile would not be unusual for many customers, and Mazda probably tries to build an engine to handle that, but this particular one didn't for some reason. Therefore time for warranty.
Sure Mazda can weasel out if they want, but hopefully companies always receive enough negative press for stuff like this to make it worth replacing an engine.

And here we have the frequent poster who claims you can basically do whatever you like and the manufacturer has to prove it is oil / maintenance.

I agree I’d take it to arbitration… he/she should have stored up a social media firestorm too.

Just as I could post a screen shot of an identical email from Mazda, except that mine would give the denial reason as miniature aliens in the sump. I could post it to Reddit as well, complete with redactions - or not.

I don't know what Mazda's wording says but with most automakers, they are usually quite open to interpretation. I mean, define "short" trips. What does "stop and go" driving mean ? Is there a # of stops per mile that defines this ? If anyone attempts to "answer" these questions, they are just their opinion anyway.

If all the information shared from OP is true that is pretty crappy especially with all the brands and machining, engine, bearing recalls etc.

For the OLM's and severe service, some don't show anything different. My wife's Pilot is short tripped daily to work (2 miles each way) but gets longer drives on weekends and trips. OLM was giving about 7500 OCI's on 0W-20. My UOA showed fuel dilution and wear metals. This one will be at about 5k with 5W-30 Euro PP as soon as temps warm slightly and wind stops. I don't recall seeing any severe service/use details in the manual. I'll need to re-check.

Future DIL's '21 Tucson was factory set at like 7-8k and 12 months. Her UOA was horrible and a lot f fuel dilution. It gets about 5 miles each way daily to work and not many longer weekend trips. She is now on a 3k / 6 month schedule but her MM does not adjust for mileage or anything strictly time and miles that you pick.

My FIL's '16 Renegade got a new motor at 83k under warranty at least. Most of his OCI's were at dealer by MM at about 7k intervals. His burned a lot of oil from early on in life. It doesn't even give you settings or view of where it is. It adjusts and pops on about 100 miles before it thinks it needs it so you can schedule. In his manual it does list a severe service of 4k intervals but it's on you to write down and monitor that. I am doing that now for him with this motor. Also due as soon as weather and my schedule allow.

So if data information is collected the MM's should reflect that with all the technology provided. If you don't change and just reset, again that is on you. You could also bring to dealer and they say they did it but might not actually have but they will blame you for the sludge of 15k oil use.

I helped a young EMT at firehouse on Sunday. Her older Accord was serious PS whine. Reservoir was basically empty so filled and got most air out. Still need to work on that and where it went. I only see her at firehouse on weekends. We checked her oil. She said she still has 50% on the MM until next change. I asked if she actually checked it and she said no, was never shown how, now she knows how. Her 4.5qt with filter capacity needed 2.5qts to get it to full mark. That will be a work in progress to try and help her.

I need a BITOG burner account 🤣

Who?

As far as I'm concerned, when a company shows who/what they really are, believe them. Cancel Mazda, and I'm currently car shopping.
That is too sad that you would use a post in social media to cancel a car. You would never buy a car, look up social media posts on the others.

Here is one for you. My wife's 2012 Mazda with Skyactive engine, first or 2nd year production motor no less, highest mass produced compression engine in the world. Nov 2024 we just sold it to someone in our community who wanted a reliable 2nd car.
In the cars history it has NEVER needed a repair.

However Mazda did step up to the plate when the car was out of warranty for a year or two. It became a known issue, however slight. My particular wife some years ago noticed a slight gap between the top of the dashboard (some separation) from where a small information display was.
I didnt care, I mean, the South Carolina summers in the middle of the state easy are in the mid to high 90s 100s too. I figured it was the heat. Anyway, she brought it to Mazda attention. Guess what? They ordered and replaced the ENTIRE dashboard on a Mazda 3 the instrument cluster stayed.

Now you can go back to looking at Mazda's based on my social media post. I mean, critical thinking is called for in social media. EVERY product in the world you will find unhappy stories. Let's face it. the persons warranty was over. The warranty is a contract and it ended. Furthermore you prejudge the car company and exclude the facts that you do not know, the abuse that car endured. the way it was driven, stone cold, gas petal floored at every light. Oil changes 6 or 7,000 miles during the cold winter.

I would have pushed back a bit. The engine should not have failed due to going over the severe OCI by 600 miles.

Nuggets of info make you go down rabbit holes. It's not that this one instance is so glaring, it's that it shows you a pretty common trend. And, if you're on the fence between say ... a CRV and a CX50, and you're flipping a coin, I'll let the bad warranty stories sway me.

Plenty of Honda horror stories on Reddit too. In fact every manufacturer is on there.

Sounds like a troll post on a Reddit forum. Even if by some wild chance this actually it did happen, I seriously doubt that laughable “letter” from Mazda. What is worse is those who automatically swear off Mazda (or add other manufacturers here________) over something like this. I frequent Mazda forums as well as Hyundai forums and never seen anything of the sort for reasons described, and those are usually the first places someone goes to blow up a story. One thing I will state, is there is some validity in those (like me) who desire to stay within a 5k OCI, at least while in warranty. I might even use the best oils available, rather than the “good enough for 5k changes” oil, but that’s on me and my wallet.

There is simply too much ‘infotainment’ missing from this story, a letter that looks like it was written by his best buddy, and a simple denial based on 29k worth of “information” supposedly used.

As both a Mazda and a Hyundai owner, I’ve never had warranty issues out of either company. My daughter has a 2017 Sonata (she is second owner, bought used at a Chevy dealer) that lost an engine and was replaced by Hyundai at 93k no questions asked.

Too many holes in this story for me to buy, and a lot of gullible knee jerking by a few others.
