Owner denied warranty for being outside OCI by 600 miles and short tripping.

Yes, my Honda has a "maintenance minder". It does not account for short trip, though. I still say that Mazda's maintenance info is lacking; it doesn't define "short trip" or "cold". If this story is actually true, and they denied coverage based on 600 too many miles, I'd be looking for a lawyer.
You sure?

Our odyssey sure does. And we get a change alert around 5k because of it.

600 is over 10% more than the requirement. How much goodwill is too much? Sure, Mazda should have 10-20% engineering reserve in their oci requirement, but the owner still failed to maintain properly.

Thats not to say it should have happened.

This is probably incorret information. GM's system certainly does. Why would Honda be any different?

I'm sure there is MORE to this story! Any dealer worth his salt would have gone to bat for a good customer and any manufacturer would not risk the loss of a client over this.

I drive about 5000 miles a year. Mostly short trip, city miles. The maintenance minder will show something like 50% oil life after 12 months.

Currently, the car is at 36,000 miles. Purchased 6/2017.

Yes, I'm sure. After an initial oil change at about 2000 miles, and another at 5000 miles, I've been changing it at 5000 mile intervals. 5000, 10,000, 15,000, etc. I did this to keep it easy to remember. Each time, about one year, and the MM reads 50% or so at changing time. More recently, I've moved up to 6 month change cycles. I didn't check the MM for oil life, because it's moot. And I have both the factory Honda service manual for my car, and the owners manual, and neither lists any "severe duty" cycle related to cold or short trip.

Again, repeating myself, Mazda does NOT DEFINE "short trip" or "cold" weather, so how the heck is joe lunchpail owner supposed to even know that they are supposed to change their oil at 5000 miles?

Turbo engine sure was a wrong choice for 4.3mi commute routine. Who knows what oil they used during dealer service and whether they actually changed oil and what oil level was maintained. Owner said they couldn't get in for oil change at dealer on time due to dealer being busy, sounds like an excuse, there are other places to get an oil change. Both owner and Mazda failed in this story.

A quick google search shows OCI intervals on a 2017 Civic/Accord using synthetic oil should be between 7,500 and 10,000 miles.Have you ever done an analysis? However-over at Civic X.com it seems to echo what you are experiencing on the oil minder. Most seem to change at 7,500 miles.

Someone here saying it was out of warranty...I didn't see that in the first post so if that's the case, can't believe this is even a discussion.
Post 1 said it was a 2023 model, and it would be covered under the power train warranty which is longer than the standard bumper to bumper warranty. It was still new enough and had low enough miles to even still be under the bumper to bumper warranty, so it was definately still under factory warranty and not a 3rd party extended warranty.

The CX-50 is assembled at Mazda Toyota Manufacturing (MTM) in Huntsville, AL. The 2.5 turbo is derived from Toyota.

Did someone sneak in a HyunKia 2.5 inside this Mazda frame.......lol

2.5T is Mazda's own. The hybrid system is Toyota's though. Supposedly the next hybrid will be designed in-house by Mazda.
