Bought a barely used 2010 Toro Recycler 22" off Craig's list for 100 bucks. It has the Briggs and Stratton 6.75 engine on it. Mint condition. No leaks, rust, and starts on first pull. Wish it had aluminum deck, but oh well.

Owner's manual says 5w30 synthetic is recommended, but I have a ton of Mobil Clean 5000 5w30 I'd like to use up.

I will be mowing in near 100 degree temps in the next 4-8 weeks here.

Can I use this oil without harm or just go buy a quart of synthetic?

You can use it without harm, although you may want to reduce the oil change interval if the owners manual specifies synthetic to get to a certain hour mark.

If you run out of the Mobil Clean, go for Mobil 1 High Mileage 5w30.

How many hours does the manual recommend changes at with the 5w30 syn?

Yes you can use it without harm. It will consume quite a bit though in those temperatures, so keep the oil level topped off. Or just go buy a quart of synthetic 5W30 if you prefer.

Really? I have a 2009 version of this mower. I'm pretty sure it's the same B&S engine, and mine recommends using straight 30-grade oil. I've been using Pennzoil conventional HD30 in mine since I bought it back in 2009.

I have the 20330 model year 2010. The manual shows that little chart with arrows throughout temp range. It shows 30 weight, 10w30, 5w30 conventional and 5w30 synthetic.

It does say that use of 10w30 may result in more oil consumption.

I need to find where it says 5w30 is recommended. I know I did read that phrase though, just not sure in which manual/web site of Toro or B&S.

From B&S Web Site: To optimize engine performance, use Warranty Certified Briggs & Stratton Small Engine Oil. Briggs & Stratton offers a Synthetic 5w30 oil that provides the best protection at all temperatures as well as improved starting with less oil consumption.

It says to change yearly. I would assume to the average person maybe that is 25 hours?

It gets pretty hot here in summer, so I think I will just spring for some synthetic oil as I am not the greatest at checking lawn mower/snow blower oil like I should be. Real busy sometimes. :-)

Yeah, I guess B&S and Toro diverge on their recommendations. From my 2009 Toro 20333 owner's manual:

Quote:
Oil Type: SAE 30 detergent oil with an API service classification of SF, SG, SH, SJ, SL, or higher.)

My Cub Cadet push mower with almost the same sized engine says to use 10w30 and is stamped right on a sticker near the dipstick.

No worries, you can use it. I use RT6 in all OPE, including an identical mower, but that's just for convenience. That 190cc flathead Briggs engine will be just fine on a conventional 30-wt. Just keep the hours a little shorter than synthetic.

Funny you mentioned the T6. I run the T5 10w30 in my Chinese OHV engine on my Cub Cadet and like the oil. With the high heat here Summer I'd bet the T6 5w-40 would be a great oil choice.

Off topic a bit, but it is amazing how many people have this exact mower or at least the same Quantum B&S engine. Must be a pretty good engine for Briggs.

The 190CC B&S is my favorite walk-behind mower engine, period. Smooth, quiet, torquey, simple, reliable, and has a gravity-fed float bowl carb that doesn't get all persnickety over ethanol or old fuel the way the PulsaJet carbs on the smaller Briggs flathead do. I prefer them with a primer-bulb carburetor, but even my Recycler with the questionable automatic choke has always been a 1-pull starting engine.

If your not starting in cold temperatures i would recommend the Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w30 variant over the 5w30 for less VII's and higher HTHS. Should consume less.

The main deal with lawnmowers is to keep the oil level up. If the engine doesn't have a low oil shut off. Then you should at least check the level every fill up. The older an OPE engine is, the more likely it is to use oil. What you use for oil doesn't really matter. The B+S manual I read , said to use 30 W. Any thing else is fine, but to check the level frequently when not using 30 W. Every so often, knock the dust out of the air filter for good measure. So you guys are ALL right in your advice

Toro Recyclers are my favorite mowers. I wouldn't worry about the steel vs. aluminum deck. I actually prefer the steel deck. I see very few steel decks that have rusted through, but most older aluminum decks I have seen have corroded through in spots and have holes in them. Scrape the grass off the bottom before storing it and you should be fine.

That Briggs Quantum engine will run well on anything from 5w30 to 15w40. I would recommend the heavier weights if you don't always check the oil. Is this a front drive mower or personal pace rear drive?

I have the same mower and use 10-30 (Edge, at the moment).

Here's a tip for you: They are very sensitive to a too-high oil level and will smoke, generally at start-up, unless it is at or below the top mark.

One more thing i want to add. The transmission in mine went after only 3 years of pampered use; they use nylon, or plastic, gears.
