Getting the new Mazda 3 5 Door GT tonight!! I am planning on using Amsoil 0-20 after about 2k miles. Any other thoughts on OCI, etc for this car?

Thanks!

From my experience with the 3, I'd highly recommend you get the 3M clear bra installed before you even drive it home. Mazda's paint is fragile and chips easily. If you don't mind the maintenance, you could get a traditional bra from Mazda for a fraction of the cost. I kept mine clean and dry and had excellent luck with it.

Enjoy the car...they're great!

Check the oil filter section to see reports of which cartridges fit best.

Otherwise, enjoy the car! I'm jealous - Auto/Manual? Color?

If it is cartridge, everyone has had good luck with everything except Purolator PureONE.

thats definately some bad tlc right there...

The good thing is with the 2.3L you get the 5spd auto, MUCH better than the 4spd auto in the previous years and/or mated with the 2.0L currently. Enjoy the new ride!

Could someone explain what is wrong with the PureONE cartridge filter... I have a 2.3L Mazda 3 also and used this filter for my first oil change.

Nothing wrong with PureONE. Although some say the media is so tight that it can hamper flow, but thats conjecture. Don't know if it's true. But yeah, don't run the FF to 7500miles!! That's only for people who don't know or care about how manchinery works!

I like my '04 except for the weak A/C ,poor excuse for carpet and brittle paint. I should have sold it and kept my 90 Mustang GT.

I have the same manual 2.3L in my Ford Fusion and I have seen five different filters and most of the cartridges have looked the same except for the Wix/Napa Gold filter, which appears to have much more media. This would hamper flow?

I have read the PurolatorOne filter cartridge for the 2.3L Mazda3 frequently collapses inside the cartridge housing.

it is actually a bit too long and crushes inside the cartridge. It doesn't maintain its original shape.

I had the same experience with the purolator in my mazda3 as well. It is slightly too long and crushes in the housing when you tighten it. My first UOA showed good filtration however. Go with Napa Gold/Wix. If you buy in bulk you can get them for about $3.

WRONG! I had the same results with the Wix/NAPA Gold as the PureONE. Both cartridges seem to slightly crush or twist/crush. There's a thread on here with lots of pictures. Search for a thread about "boutique oil filter" or something along those lines.

In any event, there was no harm in terms of the UOA when that happened to me.

I noticed that the filter crushed slightly when I installed it, but I thought that the filter was meant to be crushed slightly in order to ensure a tight seal so the incoming pressurized "dirty" oil wouldn't flow past the rubber end- caps and thus resulting in some of the oil not being filtered.

I thought this was a good thing considering that a loose fitting filter would allow the "dirty" oil to seep past and not being filtered.

Does this make sense?

I just got done doing an oil change on my 2.3 with the Wix/Napa Gold filter. I noticed it was a little long, but the cartridge cap went on. I bet I'm going to pull out a twisted mess when I do my next oil change.

All this talk about Cartridges! No worries BTLew after 2005 all Mazda 3s can with spin on flange. If I had a cartridge I'd invest in the spin-on adapter that the stealer sells. No more worries about stipping that hex nut.
