New Battleships

I feel that it would be a very good thing to have the government and these industries team up with the schools to create a pathway to these trades. It would give the dept of education something worthwhile to do, and strengthen the country.
Very true

I would think the "new ones" would look exactly like the uss New Jersey, USS North Carolina, USS Texas, ect because thats what they would be.
Battleships with 16 inch thick armor firing 1 ton armor piercing ammo 20+ miles that can't be stopped would disrupt most current naval strategic planning by US enemies. Everything is all about carriers these days. All the anti ship missiles that are designed to sink carriers aren't going to slow down a Battleship.
What happens if the target is 30+ miles away?

While they are being called "battleships," these new ships have less in common with the old WWII battleships that bristled with 16" guns. These new ships will be more like a super-sized modern cruiser armed with lots and lots of missiles, lasers, and rail guns that can shoot things hundreds of miles away.
Now we’re talking - the name is being used, because of size, but the ship is different from the WW II ships called by the same name in every way that matters.

This announcement is a bit odd since Congress hasn't allocated any funding for any of these proposed programs. And what I'm getting is that "battleship" is rather poor branding for this proposed class of naval vessel. I suspect that it's never going to be built.
Are you sure?

I am sort of there also. But I have learned to never underestimate there ability to spend money.

The concept has been in the works for a while. One commentator I read said that with the retirement of the 70s era Ticonderoga class of missile cruisers coming up, the Navy is going to lose a big chunk of the surface fleet's vertically launched missile capacity. This new class of "battleships" would replace the lost missile launch platforms plus do a lot more... But it's all vaporware at this point and not all of the technology is even ready for some of the proposed systems.
