Mopar Insiders: Our First Look At The All-New Twin-Turbo 3.0-liter GME-T6 Inline-Six Engine!.

the s62 is thin because it was bored out twice from the original 4.0 design
I'd argue it is also thin because it can be. The first picture was an M62TUB44, which is 4.4L.
Here's another view of it:

This M62 of course had 92mm bores vs the 94mm bores in the S62, so the S62 was thinner still.

The 305 and 350 SBC's also had the same bore spacing, but you couldn't punch a 305 out to be a 350 because there wasn't enough wall there; the castings were different. There was also the 400SBC with yet again the same bore spacing, but larger bores still, at 4.125". But even the 400 didn't have as little wall material between bores as we are seeing with these special alusil (and nikasil) BMW blocks:

If we want to be really pedantic, the M62 was the successor of the M60, which was available in a 3.0L version with 84mm bores vs the 89mm bores for the 4.0L version.

The M62 was also available in several different displacements ranging from 3.5L to 4.6L and thus bores from 84mm to 93mm, so just a tick off the S62's 94mm bores.

If we look at the S85, it has slightly smaller bores at 92mm, but still pretty tight bore spacing:

Particularly if we compare it to a big bore iron block like the 6.4L HEMI:

Not too much wrong with that for sure. BMW put some work into that exhaust sound and it shows.
In general, I think the perfectly even exhaust pulses of an inline even number cyl engine aren't as interesting as the V engines, and if its straight piped, an inline 6 or 4 isn't great sounding unless the rev get way up there IMO.
With the V engines there's more sound complexity that varies with rpm, and having two cylinder heads allows an H pipe or crossover. At autocross a few years ago a bunch of young guys brought old 328's and straight piped them and they sounded alot like the old city buses, until they got near redline.... Another guy had an old ratty x-piped 4.0 V6 mustang with no mufflers which sounded amazing in comparison.
Turbos have a huge impact on exhaust sound regardless of the number of cylinders.

I like the thickness between the bores of that big HEMI. And the fact that it's solid cast iron. I don't care how "outdated" it is. I'll take it over some screaming, sleeved turbo any day. There is no substitute for cubic inches. And simple is always better.
