Mobil 1 & Oil Consumption in Hondas

Last night I was talking to my neighbor who just bought a nice WRX coupe. We were talking about cars and he said he used to have a Mustang. He said he stopped using Mobil 1 because when he switched over to it, his car started to consume oil.

Something in Moibl 1's formulations causes higher than normal oil consumption in *certain engines. I've heard it could be the higher volatility of the Alkylated Napthalene base oils.
 
There may be some truth to your suggestion based on the formulation and engine type/build quality.

I however have owned several Honda's (Pilot 3.5l V6, Civic Si 2.0 I4) and I never had any oil consumption issues.

I used M1 5-30 T and SUV, 0w-20, 0w-30 all M1 brands.

How did you come to the conclusion the Honda's are effected by M1?
 
Considering M1 represents 60% of the syn lube market, it's really hard to say. However, it does seem that a lot of people have issues with M1 & consumption when compared to other brands.
 
There seems to be a strong corelation between M1 10W-30 and even higher than usual consumption in the AP1 S2000 F20C engine. There also seems to be quite a few automatic timing chain tensioner failures while using M1 10W-30. I've been observing this on a S2000 forum for over 6 years now.
 
I heard it over and over on the RSX forums. People who burned oil and smoked like crazy always answered "Mobil 1" when I asked what they used. I told them to switch to dino and it always ~alleviated~ the problem, but they already had burned-out engines from it.

Hard learned lessons (sigh). You tried to warn them. That's about all you can do.

My Hondas:

2003 Odyssey, 130K miles, Mobil 1 5W20/0W20 since factory fill changeout. Maybe 1/2 quart between 5000 mile changes

2003 Pilot, purchased with 47,000 miles. Mobil 1 5W20 at 5000 mile
intervals. Maybe 1/2 quart between 5000 mile changes, currently at 90K miles

2009 Odyssey. Mobil 1 5W20 according to maintenance minder (7000 or so). 15K miles, no consumption.

There simply must be more to this than the seductively simple proposition that "Hondas burn Mobil-1". I bought a 1988 Civic LX sedan new in 88, and drove it for over ten years and more than 150k miles. I used M1 after I finished break-in (except for one dino change at about the eight year mark after a brief period between jobs when I simply could not afford it...). Anyway, trading that car was a sad automotive error on my part... It used DEAD ZERO oil over a 5k OCI when I kissed it goodbye.

So, it may be certain Honda engines under certain conditions, but I don't buy for a moment the idea that M1 and Honda engines are simply incompatible. It just worked too well for me to accept this. The top of my cyl head looked as clean as the day it was cast when I traded it. Go figure.

How could it have alleviated it when they already had 'burned-out engines'?

I don't doubt your experience, but the Mobil-1 you used is not the same Mobil-1 sold in the past few years.
 
My Hondas always loved M1.
Ignore the M1 motor honey I currently have in both of my Accords.
The '99 ran 0W-30 AFE over the last winter, while the '97 ran a mix of two quarts 5W-20 EP + two quarts 5W-30 EP.
Neither car used any significant quantity of oil, or at least little enough that make up oil was not required.
The '99 used M1 5W-30 almost exclusively in its early life, and never used any noticeable amount.
Both of these Hondas have always been run pretty hard.
After all, Hondas love the redline, and were made to see it often.

For my last oil change I used M1 0w-30 in my Subaru, and in the 10+ years that I've been driving Subarus, this was the first time I ever needed to top up oil between oil changes.

That being said, I'm sticking with M1 0w-30 for a little longer, I already have a couple more oil changes worth and I've heard of people experiencing unexplained oil consumption when switching brands after a period of consistently using a different brand. I'm going to stick with the M1 and see if the consumption goes down
 
I think castrol motor oil are underrated. I use castrol gtx on my 2006 toyota camry v6. after 6000 miles, no oil consumption, oil is pretty much clean...

I am thinking about using castrol 5w20 on my 2010 honda pilot 1st oil changed.. do you guys recommend castrol regular dino, blend, or full synthetic? thanks
 
'02 Accord SE 4 cyl 60K AT M1 5W-20/M1 104 filters since initial OC at 5k, 5K/6MO changes since, never uses a drop between changes.

'06 Civic EX Coupe AT sold privatly at 85K, used M1 5W-20/M1-110
from initial change at 5k, every 5k therafter, never added a drop between changes

'10 Civic EX Coupe AT 15K M1 5W-20/M1-110 at initial 5k OC, changes at 10K & 15K with the same, no oil added between changes, dipstick level never changes.

Ya beginning to see a pattern here?

Oh, yeah, '04 Miata LS 6speed 15K use M1 0W-30/M1-108 change once a year, never touches a drop

M1 has worked well for me, see no reason to experiment with anything else
