Lexus RX350
Miles : 168,000
Engine : 2GR-FE
Oil capacity : 6.5 qts

Had it since 110,000 miles, no leaks, no oil consumption, regular OCI every 5000 miles.
Always full synthetic, Pennzoil or Mobil 1 or Castrol Edge.
Current oil is Castrol Edge 5W-30 with Mobil 1 filter.

Next oil change due soon, in about 5 wks.
I have 6 qts of Mobil 1 0W-40 European car formula. Thinking of using that at next change. However will be short 0.5 qt.
Not sure what to make it up with - if it is advisable. Unfortunately do not currently have any Mobil 1 in my stash. Have plenty of
Pennzoil Platinum HM 5W-30 or Castrol Edge (black bottle 2 qt leftover) 5W-30 or Total Quartz - 'euro' 5W-30 and 5W-40.

Never mixed brands before as never needed to. While I'm sure the engine will not blow up - whichever oil I use for 1/2 qt, Looking for suggestions for which one would be relatively the closest or most optimal choice. Thanks for the thoughts

The Euro add packs might be more similar, so that could be an option.

However, I think I'd go with the Pennzoil Platinum HM 5w30. That has some GTL.

Mobil 1 0w40 also has a lot of GTL.

This will be 7 percent of the oil, so I don't think it's much of a concern anyway you go.

Honestly being only 1/2 quart short, I don't think it will be a problem. I wouldn't add any from another source. Just put the 6 qrts in and leave it there.
Here's why I think this to be true:
- the 2GR-FE is fairly easy on oil; not known to be a sludger, or run hot (which would cause concerns for evaporation and oxidation)
- the M1 is very robust and has a decent HT/HS rating; unlikely to dissipate quickly
- a 5k mile OCI isn't long at all; if you were running 15k miles it might matter, but not in 5k mile
- the range on the dipstick is fairly broad; more than 1/2 quart, so you're still going to be above the add mark anyway
- you said it doesn't leak or burn oil, so there's little risk in starting a little under the full mark

Rather than mixing oil immediately, why not just run the 6 qrts you have and only add another oil if it actually needs the volume (not just because you feel it to be so)?

I haven't seen the Euro 0w40 in quarts.
(Sam) Any oil is compatible. Choose from SP 0w8 to 10w40. I' would stick with Mobil-1 labels, but not necessary.
Advance has it in quart size, and if you have one close, Menards does as well and is cheaper than AAP.

Thank you. I had not thought about it that way.
I will definitely check the level after putting in the 6 qts and then go from there.

Thanks.
But the high prices per quart should drive anyone towards either the 6-pk case or the five quart jug purchase.

My grandson's Colorado takes six quarts. Bought two five quart jugs for it four times in a row. Then the fifth OCI, only needed to buy one jug.

If it’s not burning any oil like you claim, you don’t need the .5qt. The oil will still be in the safe zone on the dipstick

I would not mix the oils just for half a quart of capacity. 1\2 low or high in most ICE engine will make no difference in performance.

Yes, that is always an option, but at $10 a quart.
get another 5 quart. And use it as the topper off. Just use one brand of oil, and call it a day.

Hopefully will across a clearance in the meantime @$2/qt or so for 1 qt.
If not, will just pour in 6 qt and watch the levels closely over the OCI
Been following the Mobil 1 Truck and SUV clearance at AAP, but prices haven't dropped to my level yet!
