Reading what others are using on this forum , and the only UOAs I can find, people seem to recommend:

All 0w-20(recommended):
Castrol EDGE Professional (where can this be bought?)
Castrol EDGE Titanium
PP
Idemitsu (where can this be bought? I see it on Amazon but shipping a bit steep)
M1
"Mazda oil" (something I guess I can only buy at the dealer)

Seems like none are a "group" favorite, and all debated. Is there a thread somewhere that lists pros and cons for each? My vehicle is northern US, 60% short trips under 6-10 miles, and 40% highway miles but those trips only happen 1-2 times per months.

I'm leaning towards 4 month intervals (will only have ~2k miles) and PP 0w-20,only because I use PU on our Subaru currently but I'd use Castrol EDGE titanium if it was "better" for more purposes, or any other choice assuming 5 quarts was $27 or less.

Use whats cheap since you are going to swap the fluid so often. Try and get a short hwy run in every week or 2 to burn moisture out of ur oil. Such short intervals..many good 0w20 options available.

Unless something changed in the last few months "Mazda Oil" is blended by Idemitsu. I would guess they are similar if not the same product in different bottles.

My wife has/drives a 2012 Mazda3 iTouring with the Skyactiv engine and a 6 speed manual. I've always used Kendall 0W20 in it. I'm going to use Castrol Edge Titanium from now on due to supposedly scoring well in TEOST Test.

Reason for 4 month->> DI plus short trips scare me a bit, I believe OM "severe" recommendation is 4-5 months. I don't mind spending $75-$85/year on oil. Planning on keeping vehicle for more than 5 years, hopefully 7+, only has 90 miles on it now.

I just bought a 2014 Mazda 3 hatchback and plan to run Mobil 1 0w30 in it after the free oil change Mazda promised @ 1,000 miles (to remove the break-in oil)

The reason for the thicker oil, is because my owners manual says that Mazda recommends 0w20 in the US and Canada but 5w30 else where in the world. This is very obviously due to gas mileage.

The car only has 200 miles on it right now, but I plan to first get a good baseline of my MPGs with the 0w20 and then see if it changes much with M1 0w30...

Mobil 1 0w30 is on the thin side, so it's not much thicker then a 0w20 plus the car will be modified soon, and both me and the wife drove it HARD right outta the dealership

To maximize protection at startup and mpg especially for the short trips/severe service, you would be best served with Mazda with moly 0w20 or TGMO. These are two of the lightest and robust oils that have some of the highest VI 221/216 and 40cst of 35/38. I would suggest at least trying one of these oils and you can compare the difference with PP 0w20.
The Mazda and TGMO will be about $30 but considering the meager few dollars more you'd spend you are getting by far a much higher quality oil.
I've used the majority of synthetics including PP and none of them have been able to offer the gains in mpg and almost effortless drivability in all seasons as seen with the Mazda oil especially. The Mazda oil is skyactiv approved and recommended to!!!

Interesting, I should add this is the 2.0L engine, not a touring model. That being said, could you share any well priced Mazda oil for purchase online? Or TGMO? I know I could drive to the dealer, but I wouldn't be sure their bulk fill is the real thing.

I have the sedan, I love the way it drives, and he appearance of the car. Body Reminds my of 2006-2008 BMW 3 series , tight handling, I have the 6 spd automatic, but the "Manual mode" shifts nicely. All in all, for the price, what you get is fantastic.

I've owned ten BMWs over the past thirty years and I prefer my 2007 Mazdaspeed 3 over any of the new F3x 3ers. The new Threes feel like Munich has built in an extra layer of isolation from the road. Meh.

Rosenthal Arlington Mazda has an online store, (parts.arlingtonmazda.com)but really most mazda dealers will carry it in 1quart bottles. It will have Mazda with Moly written on it. Part # is GF-5 0W20 W/MOLY (QR (0000-G5-0W20-MQ)
For the TGMO same thing applies although at most Lexus dealers the bulk fill is TGMO 0w20. Toyota and Lexus sell TGMO in 1quart bottles as well. For peace of minds sake just ask the parts dept people and confirm.
Cheers.

OP, I'm in the same time/mileage frame as you with the same car, 4 month's about 2k miles. I'm using QSUD 0w20 and an OE filter. Got the QSUD 0w20 from WM for $22.00.
