Hey guys,

This has been probably debated a thousand times, but what the heck!

I have a 2.0 skyactiv four cylinder engine in a 2018 Mazda3, ODO at 219k km, I go per the manual here in Canada for OCI at 5k miles (8k km) with OEM filter.

I am tempted to try Mobil 1 since its been a long time, but I wonder if the "noise" or "clatter" is still an issue, since I saw many posts on here mentioning it, others say its the best oil ever and it runs super quiet in the valvetrain and has something "special" to it. Which oil group is Mobil 1 AFE is using now?

Mobil 1 still claims better fuel economy, some claim they get better MPG, any truth? Other better options?

I am currently over due at 11 000 km running Castrol Magnatec 0w20.

A few oil on sale at the moment:

- Castrol GTX Full Synthetic 0w20 34.99 CAD
- Quaker State Full Synthetic 0w20 36.99 CAD
- Mobil 1 AFE 0w20 36.99 CAD (extended performance also to mention)
- Castrol Magnatec Full Synthetic 0w20 39.99 CAD
- Valvoline Advanced 0w20 34.99 CAD

Feel free to share better options and/or experience. Thanks.

What year, what model and what does the odo say?

Sis had a 2.0l (1998cc) in a 2012.
I would've used any on your list.
I ignore "better fuel mileage" claims.
It was during her ownership of that car when I bought my only pail of Schaeffer's oil.

The politically correct statement to say on here is that the extra noise means nothing and that the oil protects just the same so there's no issue and that you hearing more noise might be a figment of your imagination 😵‍💫

But personally I don't like the extra noise some oils produce which in my experience has also been mobil but there's also no proof which shows it being an issue so I wouldn't worry about it. Can't really go wrong with any of them.

You’ve been here for 13 years, and still haven’t seen the massive debates around here? Boy, you were sitting in the trenches the entire time weren’t you?

In terms of the oil filter, get a Carquest premium, if not then stick to OEM.

Intervals? One year or 8,000 km, whatever comes first, if you push it to 9 or 10k km due to life, then so be it, no issue.

Oil? Some say M1 makes noise, some say it doesn’t. Every oil you’ve listed there will ensure you get what you need out of that engine for years to come. If they use salt out in NB in the winter, then the engine will outlast the chassis.

The real issue here isn’t the oil you’re using, it’s whether you’re draining and filling your coolant every 4 years/40k km, and changing the diff, trans, brake and other fluids on time as well!

Did you even read the first line of my post? I'm very aware of that.

Off the shelf oils are very similar in performance. None will really make a big difference.

Some of the higher spec versions can be a little better in some ways. M1 Truck & SUV and Pennzoil Ultra Platinum have slightly better wear and evap protection. Valvoline Restore & Protect likely cleans better. Extended drain versions do probably last a bit longer.

Frankly if you got here stick with what got you here.
Better MPG is computer modeling BS.
Curious minds would like to know what is that engines oil usage per OCI?

Use a decent Syn for 5K OCIs and swap the filter every 2nd service. I just serviced my grand niece's beautiful 2015 Mazda 3 using M1 0w20.

Well, I have been a longtime exclusive Mobil 1 user, well about 30 years. It’s never done me wrong and I haven’t had any issues with any of the motors I’ve used it in. That being said, I change the oil everytime I purchase a car, usually once a year or more, and I have noticed that quite a few get a lot more “clattery” after the change. Just recently I purchased a Hemi Durango that you couldn’t tell was running when I bought it. Drove it 5 hours home, pulled it in the driveway to show the wife and she asked why I shut it off, she wanted me to rev it. It was still running. I then did my oil change to Mobil 1 and you would have swore I engine swapped a small diesel. We drove about 3000 miles like that and it was getting to me. I messaged the person I got it from and asked him what he was using and was told “Valvoline full synthetic”. I picked up some Valvoline Advanced and changed it immediately. I’m happy to report the clatter went away completely. I was just at the gas station and had to put my ear to the front grill to hear that it was still running. Very impressed with Valvoline currently and plan to switch all my vehicles on the next change.
