I have a 2015 Land Rover Evoque. It has a Ford 2.0L Ecoboost engine and the owner's manual from Land Rover says to use " 5W-30 meeting Ford 913-B specification (aka WSS-M2C913-B)". When I purchased it in 2017, I could find no oil in the USA with that spec. The only oil I could find was the "Castrol Professional" sold by Land Rover dealers at a ridiculous price. I knew the engine was a Ford engine so I looked at the Ford Escape manual to see what Ford recommended and they said "Motorcraft SAE 5W30 Full Synthetic (XO-5W30-QFS) or Motorcraft SAE 5W30 Premium Synthetic Blend (XO-5W30-QSP) Specification WSS-M2C946-A"
So I used Castrol Edge Extended Performance which said that it met:
Exceeds API SP/SN Plus/SN/SM
ILSAC GF-6
Ford WSS-M2C946-A
Ford WSS-M2C946-B1
ACEA A5/B5,C2
Someone on the Evoque forum that claimed to be a former Ford service rep that had investigated the cause of engine failures on warranty claims said the 946 and 913 specs were not equivalent (different additives), but that the A5/C5 and 913 were equivalent/similar. He claimed the engines really need the 913 spec oil. He said something about preventing damage to the cam under high head vacuum. I have read the 913 has more zinc so maybe that is the important difference. But I still found it odd that for the exact same engine in a Ford Escape Ford was recommending a 946 spec oil in the USA. Even the Motorcraft oil they specifically mention in the Escape owner's manual just mentions 946. I continued using the Edge Synthetic Extended Performance, but it seems to have been discontinued and they only make regular Castrol Edge Synthetic 5W30 now. It no longer mentions A5/B5 but mentions:
Exceeds API SP/SN Plus/SN/SM
ILSAC GF-6
Ford WSS-M2C946-B1
Ford WSS-M2C961-A1
I have read that M2C961 surpasses M2C946. But I can't seem to find any A5/B5 or 913-D oils unless I order some Ravenol FO oil or some Motul at 2x-3x the price of what I have been using.
Since the oil I am using is no longer available, would I be ok going with the Castrol Edge WSS-M2C961-A1 oil, or would I be better off going with the Ravenol FO oil that meets 913-D (which I know is an older spec oil). Castrol also makes an Edge Euro 5W-30, but it just mentions ACEA A3/B4.
Thanks
