It is the original auto transmission. I say do 2 drain/refills per year but I might have done 3 before---the thing I don't like is that when you open the drain plug or suction out the ATF, you only get about 2.5 qts. AND I am very leary of doing the DIY flush where you feed new fluid into the sump while the cooler line expells the old fluid. the worst things on the car now are the driver's seat---leather is shredded, and the windshield has 3 rock bubbles that made a nasty crack spreading low. I would like to go to 500K miles but fear the trans will die---I am planning on swapping to a prelude motor but might just get a used 97 accord that someone thinks has "high mileage" as far as oils go, I believe it depends on how you drive, your goals such as cost, convenience, how long you plan to keep a vehicle. today's vehicles are so expensive, that you could spend 1000 dollars on oil and ATF per year and still be cheaper that a new-ish car. I used cheaper dino's with 3-4K OCI's, and syn from 6-8K and a few times I used Mobil 1 Extended Performance for 10K---but If you look at one of my old posts, I am a firm believer in keeping the oil "clean"....regardless of how much TBN/additives are left, I believe that removing contaminants via oil draining is the most important thing---some people may argue that oil appearance is not important, but I cannot be convinced that leaving an oil in a vehicle for 15K miles is a good thing---if you're not planning on keeping a vehicle for a long time, then it is not a big deal as you will not have it anymore.

Another myth debunked about having to use synthetic oil if you want superior protection. Congrats Joel.

Except for the plastic and rubber parts = junk. Been there done that on the 94 integra.

Or the iron worms, you dont see any 90's Hondas up here, most have cycled thru the local junk yard, starting to see the early 2000 stuff now, cant rememeber the last time I saw a civic or integra stuff from the 90s on my visits, there long gone due to rust.

Is that 4-cyl Accord? IF so, they never had any transmission issues. V6 transmissions have poor record

Pre 98 Honda's auto transmissions were very good (harsh) but good. It's only after the 98 Accords and those with the V6 that had reliability issue.

My Civic is the same way, only 2.5 qts comes out when I open the drain plug on the auto trans, but as long as you do it often enough, it'll keep the fluid fresh. And you have obviously been doing the right amount of changes since you're auto trans is still going strong! I did 2 back to back drain & refills (spaced 200 miles apart anyhow) on mine as soon as I got the car, and will do 1 drain and refill every year. I figure at that rate the fluid will never be in bad shape. Doing a complete flush on Honda auto transmissions is a big no-no, that killed a lot of transmissions in the past!

Find me a 1993 Accord EX 5 speed with low miles and I would happily drive that over many new cars.

To me it represents the perfect the car: enough safety & modern build quality yet unlike today's cars did not suffer from being over-styled, over featured and over weight.

My sister had one - sold it with 180K and original clutch.

I solved the captive rotor issue by using acura cl hubs, prelude/cl rotors.....there are a lot of write-ups about it.

397,000 miles on my daily driver and still going strong.
1992 Geo Metro, 3cyl, 1.0L 5 spd.
Original unopened engine and trans.
Still getting 51.6MPG driving all freeway, all on 3-4K OCI on conventional oil, whatever is on sale.

ahh yesss cannot say it enough times...these 90-97 honda accord engines are the closest thing to being bullet proof. seen them come in and run on no oil on dipstick and coolant in radiator that i could see for idunno how long still running good, countless times.

I'm jealous!

Hope my subie makes it that long! Very good work!

I don't think you can do any wrong oil-wise. I would stick with the oil you've been using, but I wouldn't bother with any super premium oils or engine flushes. Just keep it simple.

Interesting learned tidbit about the Honda transmissions from you and Patman - I will keep it in mind if I ever buy one.
