I tried to explain to my wife's grandkid

Kids are different today. When I was ten (even younger) I couldn't wait to drive. My son has no interest. I've asked him, and he isn't interested. Oddly enough, he views it as an eventuality--but since it's not possible for another 5 years, he isn't going to get worked up. Makes me think he might be more mature than me...

Personally I think it's a good thing. Cars are stupid expensive. If my kids are content to deal with boring old cars that I hand down to them, while they focus on getting good grades and/or saving money, then I'll be content myself.

I'm 24 years old, no kids or wife yet, but one thing is certain, when I do have a wife and kids, I will teach my wife to change a flat, and my kids, when old enough be it a boy or a girl, will learn to change their oil, change a flat and use a torque wrench, among other things.

What if your wife tells you to go pound sand?
One thing you will learn when you get married is that she is a human being with free will like you and she may not have the slightest interest.
I can imagine what my wife would say if I told her I was going to teach her to change a flat...she knows she will just call me and have me do it. We have actually been through that once. I know what I would tell my wife if she told me I was going to learn how to use a sewing machine or watch The Bachelor with her.

Kids are easier to boss around and you might be able to convince them that it will be fun.

Plymouth Duster) back then it cost about 20 bucks with oil and filter and we had known the owner for 12 years it was always done right. I miss the old havoline cans of oil and b.s.ing with the owner while he had the car on the lift....over cars and motorcycles. Those days are gone forever now. Their reaction is why not just take it to iffy lube and get a oil change in 15 mins. I told him car guys always change their own oil.....even jay leno says he loves changing the oil in his 150 cars.

This statement contradicts itself. It starts off talking about the good oil days of full service stations and the Texaco where the author and presumably his family got all of their oil changed; Impala, Skylark Gs, and even the Duster. Then the attitude switched gear on how the new generation doesn't know or care about cars as real car guys always change their oil like real men service their own wife; even Leno himself is a slayer of his own dragon.

I don't think it is possible to always change your own oil and still be able to get all your oil changed at at exact station. For me, I had never had anyone changed oil or transmission fluid my my cars. It is a relaxing activity for me, especially after my DC commute in a vanpool with a bunch of yapping feminists.
