Hyundia rod through the block carnage

I read both of the entire extended warranty packets we got on both of the 2013 Elantras our sons own and it is a "lifetime" warranty up to I believe 120,000 miles. The extended warranties are not for unlimited mileage.
I agree, KIA is the same way.

I’m not a hater of any make, or anyone. I will never, ever own a Kia/Hyundai. Saw way too many failures at work in my 17 years at my work. I’ll gladly buy a Toyota, Honda or Jeep or Ford or GM any day. This problem with Hyundai/Kia is ngines is disgusting PERIOD!!!🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

Kia/Hyundai lost their way. (Grew too fast)
I bought an Elantra for my mother in 2000 I believe.
She ran it to death and sold it and had no issues with it.
@53' Stude I agree.

292K on a 2006 Sonata when I sold it running great. When did the problems start?

2011 when they started using Theta II GDI engines. Those are the ones with the most problems and have the lifetime warranty settlement. The engine in this thread is the 1.8L Nu MPI and some people had issues with it too.

I don’t know what went wrong with Hyundai after that. Their older 4cyl engines that I’m most familiar with (alpha, beta, gamma family) were solid little engines. Hopefully my 1.6L Gamma GDI in my Kia Soul will be just as reliable. Accent Abuser has almost 200k on the same engine, so there’s that.

I’m convinced that a lot (not all) of the failures are due to people not bothering to check or changing their oil. A Kia tech on the Soul forums kinda backs that’s up with all the over due oil change stickers he sees every day. But I digress.

I have 96k on mine 5w30 since the 3rd or forth change.
Pennzoil plat for most of its life. ST 10w30 syn in it now.
We'll see.

Wonder if there were any warning noises?

I wouldn't touch a Kia/Hyundai 4 cylinder of the 2010's era with a 10 foot pole.

If I'm not mistaken the problem engine (Theta/Theta II) was developed in tandem with Chrysler and Mitsubishi as part of the Global Engine Alliance (GEMA). Chrysler 2.0/2.4 engines do not blow up spontaneously, and I'm not aware of Mitsubishi engines having early failures either.

Right around 75k miles on my 2.0L in my 2017. Doesn’t burn a drop of oil, and still average over 40 mpg on the highway. Not all Hyundai engines are bad, but they aren’t ones for abuse. The recommended 7,500 mile OCI with bulk 5W-20 is not a great strategy in these long term.
