Hyundai / Kia OCI Revision ?

Thanks for the replies - I will get a used oil analysis after my 2nd straight fill of Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W30 using a Carquest Premium oil filter running it to 4K mile / 6 months then check . Again , 80% driving now rural highways and interstates. On a side bar note , I find it interesting that experiences with the Hyundai 2.4L engine oil burning can vary widely with equal good care.

It’s possible that different break in techniques are the reason why some engines burn more oil than others.

So , I drained the first fill of Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W30 at 4,000 miles / 3 days shy of 6 months . This oil was done - black with soot that you couldn’t see through in this GDI 2.4L engine . Soot is abrasive to timing chains , so my second fill of Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W30 today I backed off the OCI down to 3,800 miles / 6 months. I’ll see how this OCI ends up . I just don’t see pushing mileage with this Hyundai GDI engine as even a change to 80% highway / interstate driving makes no difference with the amount of black soot produced by this engine .

My daughter has a 2011 Hyundai Santa fe with the 2.4 engine we bought it with 52k on it 3 years ago it now has 82k on it I do 3000 mile OCI with a Hyundai Filter. I have run 5w30 since we got it. I am always afraid its going to seize but the car runs good knock on wood.

Do I think the GDI engine in my 2016 Hyundai is a good engine? Absolutely not. Do I change the oil more than any other car I have owned? Nope. You can't fix a poorly made machine with slightly cleaner lubrication.
Especially with the Theta. Not a matter of if, but when it lets go.

Since I live in a rural area now , I’ll reverse my start up procedure (seat belt , phone charger , etc.) by doing those things first then start driving gently after 15 seconds of starting the car for the first few miles .

My daughter has a 2011 Hyundai Santa FE with a 2.4 engine. I do 3 months or 3000 miles with 5w30 I usually run Valvoline Advanced in all of our vehicles. I am always nervous with that Hyundai.

The `I do cars` YouTube channel just tore apart a GDI 3.8 V6 Hyundai engine used in 2020 to 2024 models that went out at 92k. His take away was more frequent oci than the 7k the owner did. Also, lots of carbon on valve stems and he said it was driven too mildly and needed an Italian tune up more often. Rod bearings went out from lack of oil.

The newest Palisade/Telluride 3.5 has GDI/port version so it should get less carbon build up.
