I would wager that some have been paid, but very, very few. If they weren't extremely diligent, they'd be beset by people blaming everything on the oil. We hear it here all the time. Everyone who's ever had an engine problem religiously changed their oil every 3,000 miles, with synthetic and the best filter money can buy, so it's clearly the fault of the oil/filter/OEM and not the fault of their imaginary maintenance practices.

I agree. If there was any evident that an engine failure related to oil Exxon/Mobil would pay few thousands for repair and/or replace the engine rather than being sued. The cost to defend themselves is much more than the cost to replace the engine, also bad PR for saving few thousands dollar isn't worth it for a big company like Exxon/Mobil.

But if someone try to file a warranty claim against oil company but evidences showed that the engine consumed oil and owner didn't check and top off as needed, then when the sump went dry the oil company would not be liable

Or any other oil company. But Mobil 1 Extended Performance is a great product, as are all the Mobil 1 oils. I do 10K OCIs and have no doubt I could go longer without a problem.

So why do you run AFE instead of EP when the cost is about the same and you do 10K OCI's?

I started using Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w20 well before 0-20EP came on the market. I had already proven that AFE is an outstanding oil, and with the 10-15K OCI success some were having here with AFE I couldn't see any reason to change.

I thought the exclusions and conditions on that list were quite minimal and reasonable, IMO. I've seen a lot worse in terms of warranties.

I would never do it if the engine has a VVT system.

Why do you say that?

So basically Mobil says you go 15K or 1 year & they'll back you up, regardless of driving conditions? I just skimmed through quickly.

No.

So, some could short trip 1 mile heat cycling (cooling off between runs) for 1 year and 15k miles? No thanks. By the time the oil get to 5k it would be ruined.

I noticed this last year, I was reading Mobil's definition of severe service, they don't mention short trips on their list. I noticed it because other oil companies list it under severe service, as does our car's owner manual.

VVT has an oil screen. If you go over 3k mi on conventional or 5k mi on synthetic it will clog and your engine will be ruined.

OP here - I don't think I'll hit the 13K mile OCI mark before I hit the 7 ~ 8 month OCI mark which puts me into Sept. / Oct. time frame. At that time I will do a oil change to cover Fall & Winter . *I'm just trying to avoid a change with a short OCI in July or August and then turn around and do it again in Oct. or Nov. when I usually do my Fall / Winter oil change .

Maybe short tripping for 15k is much worst than the ocasional towing, than dusty conditions, but they dont mention it? I bet they wouldnt garantee a rebuild on that one also.

OP Here - Majority of trips are 6 miles ~ 12 miles with a few in the 3 mile range . Very rare for trips under 3 miles ...

Surely you're not serious.

They don't have to, IMO the one year change mandate has them covered them on that.

Maybe he was referring to this situation.

This was a very interesting part of the article.
"According to a recent API survey of more than 1,800 oil samples purchased from bulk dispenser tanks in quick lube shops across the U.S., nearly 20% (one out of five!) failed to meet API standards. Either the viscosity was incorrect or the additive package failed to meet the claimed performance level."

The ep is not a better oil it is an oil that may run up to 15,000 miles instead of 10,000 miles Tell me which protects better for the 10,000 mile interval. M1 or Mobil 1 Extended Performance? Not many people keep their vehicles that long. Some do and aren't using fancy high priced Boutique oils.

I'm not sure if I believe it myself.

Toyota is one the best selling cars with one of the best reputations for reliability.

Same Toyota cars get longer OCIs around the world.

We also all know lots of people don't change their oil on a regular basis. Multiply that by millions of cars.

Just like the 1MZ-FE sludge issue I feel people who are very concerned about their car make it a bigger issue than it actually is.

I agree. If I buy a brand new vehicle, and use whatever brand, in the proper viscosity and with the specified filter, for the life of the vehicle, and can document all that, I would suggest I'd have a shot at the oil company's warranty if something legitimately did go south because of the oil.

Hopping from brand to brand every oil change obviously would never help one's case, nor would failing to follow either the oil company's or OEM's maintenance guidelines. And yes, there are plenty of loopholes, but they're far from insurmountable.

What's probably jaw dropping is how much the oil companies have to spend to deal with nonsense complaints. They'd probably be a lot happier paying for a well documented, legitimate complaint than they would for 99% of the gibberish they must see daily.

Mobil and Petro-Canada have fairly sensible warranties. No matter who it is, we can't be expecting oil companies to pay for shoddy maintenance or for something that isn't their fault.

Maybe most of the time, not always. Some are risking their engines, at one year.
