Someone here, gave me a cool idea, about mixing oils..
what woul i make or happen, if i took mobil 5w 30 or 10w30, dino and synthetic, 2 quarts each, and ran it like that? It would be basically 50/50 dino/synthetic?
Thoughts? ideas?

ziggy, I reckon that making your own blend at least gets you a blend of somewhat known composition.

I don't think they're compatible. These formulas use very different levels of calcium. The dino will dilute calcium in the synthetic and calcium from the synthetic will overdose the dino. Calcium in the individual formulas is already at correct levels.

Look for a synthetic that uses levels of additives that are closer to those levels in your dino.

Jorton, how do you know the conventional contains the maximum level of calcium instead of what the budget for additives would allow?

Sometimes the word 'correct" to the blender is a result of keeping the product in a specific price category.

Blenders can make a better syn-blend -- but not at hypothetical/suggested $3.39 retail.

Don't kid yourself. Your home brew has the chance to be much better than what the manufacturer blender uses. Like I stated above, no matter what you use, a UOA should follow - whenever you desire the answer on how well the oil is working.

No problem witht hat it has been done many times with no adverse effects at all. Purist would tell you that you are reduceing the supior qualities of the synthetic by diluuteing it with dino. For how most of us use our car's I think that a home made blend makes more sense then a store bought blend. This way you have some idea of what you are getting.I would use the Cheaper regular M1 not the M1EP in your blending.

It just so happens that I am doing a blend right now for my summer oil. It is two quarts of VP 5W30 and two quarts of RTS 5W40. This gives me a group V and III oil blend on the cheap! The VP stuff was only $3.69 a quart shipped to my door and the RTS is $14-$15 a gallon. Beats paying what they want for M1EP!

Personally, I don't like self-blending. I leave that up to the engineers and scientists who are in the best position to test, measure, and analyze what the best combinations (or at least most compatible) of base oils and additives are. I figure I'm not smart enough to figure that out on my own.

Having said that, many if not most who do blend their own will probably never notice the difference either way, negative or positive.

Never once in my life have I ever considered making my own blend. With so many good brands, types and weights to chose from, why would I want to play chemist?

Mix away ziggy, your proposed brew won't hurt a thing. Trip7, I see the anti-mixologists are out in full force.

Hey, it's your engine, do whatever floats your boat. I for one just don't get the reasoning. It drives me crazy having to buy oil in three types and five weights for my vehicles now. (5w20 syn, 5w30 syn, HD30, 10w30,15w40) The LAST thing I want to do is start buying more different oils to make custom concoctions. It also opens up a can of worms of variables. It's not very likely something weird would happen to your engine, but what if it DID?

Well somebody better tell my 1994 Caravan with 200K that blending is bad.... before it reaches 300K with a lifetime of blends. I recently got a pat on the back for the way the engine looked when a head gasket got replaced. The engine has never seen worse than a half-quart low at OCI mid-point (1.5K). You can barely hear that 4-banger at an idle too.

So please be sure to tell that to your nearest oil manufacturer chemist.

I didn't say it nessecarily WAS bad, just that there's always the potential for undisired consequences. Besides, do you feel your engine wouldn't have lasted just as long using an off the shelf product? What exactly are you trying to accomplish by blending in your application? Maybe I'm missing something here.

What makes you think my concoction is not better than the syn-blend that the oil bottler offers? He can only use so many goodies to meet that retail price structure. I don't have to abide by that. There is absolutely no proof his add-pack is better-balanced than mine.

The only time I have ever blended oils is when I ran out of one oil and needed another to complete an oil change. All major brands of synthetics say they can be mixed with regular oils, don't they?

Just to play devil's advocate with you, what makes you think that YOURS is better? Why do you feel you need synthetic blend? What does the final cost per quart of your blend end up being? What spec are you trying to meet that you don't think off the shelf blends meet? Just so you know, I'm not slamming you for doing this. It makes me no nevermind what you do. I just fail to see the logic in this whole thing, and by sparring with you, I'm trying to broaden my horizons and maybe learn something. I've been dying to ask somebody about this since I found this forum, and today was the day I finally did it. I knew it would be a touchy subject with many of you.
